Is it customary in Japan for people to contact the school for whatever students do outside of school perimeter? If it is then I can get why some school in manga have rules telling student to going straight home after class.

She wasn't very forthcoming with any contact information for her family, so I guess they went with the info they already had, since school uniforms tend to be easy to identify.
And yeah, there is a general view that whatever the students of a school do reflects on the school itself as well (not just in Japan, by the way).
