this isn't about trust anyway.
This has always been about trust. Katie was about to back out of the deal because it is connected to something convoluted and evil. Despite all of that, she trusts Isabella that she'll uphold her part of the deal.
That's just the risk you gotta take. It'll be the same everywhere.
Everywhere is not the same. There's this thing called "scouting" or "researching" your potential clients. The least one can do is ask for a noble's reputation among people. Katie clearly knew what kind of person Isabella was after their conversation, and never thought of any other option besides the obvious bait in front of her.
Becoming a clean adventure is basically asking to get scammed and she knows better than that. To aim to become someone like that is stupid for what she has experienced. If you really think becoming a "clean adventure" is correct, then you're still very naive.
Why do you think clean = naive? So a normal job always consists of simple-minded people who falls for everything? Should everything be corrupt? There are "clean" jobs out there that remains clean because they know how to avoid getting dirty.
You steal others food, I won't judge you, you steal my food, don't judge me for smacking you in the head.
You won't even report crimes to the authority...
Like I said: you don't worry about victims of theft, huh? Some of them might be earnest people just trying to get by.
You'll ignore everything around you, as long as you're not involved. So this is what an intellectual adult would be? I'm very disappointed.

Well, I would say at the very least she can make it up to him physically... but he's not that kind of MC and her outfit is the closest thing to service in the manga.

Not mad at the outcome, just disappointed. Knew she would be forgiven, just not this easily.

Bright side his mom looks amazing with short hair

time to enjoy the complaints from this chapter in the comments :smug:
The issue with Katie's arc COME DOWN to:

1. The MC has powerful allies like his mom and the princess so there is a lack of weight in her decision
2. Having her in the dungeon scene in the earlier chapters with the MC was just additional femdom baiting similar to the lady villain saying (-kun)
3. They waste 10 chapters with her just for this obvious reveal that she was being blackmailed

Time to let the psychopaths free in the comments

Like mentioned some chapters ago in the comments (i think 44?), after chapter 17 where it finished LN Vol.1, all of this been manga original, manga raws are only 1 ahead though

But only thing you need to know, is that Katie in the WN/LN wasn't even close to being this terrible ass character the manga made her to be
What do you mean?

tbh I blame more the author instead of katie because her actions doesn't make any sense:

- Fear of the guild disbanded? well whats the issue? everyone left so its just better to start from the bottom again.

- Fear of losing the guild house? for what do you want a big house when you lost all the members? better a small place for the girl that stayed.

- Fear of not able to protect the few members left? how?? You are one of the few S class adventurer and you are gonna tell me you can't protect a handful of girls?

This is just poor writing to try to put her against MC to stall the arc or something.
The big issue for me is that the main character has powerful allies so her siding with the MC doesn't have much weight, especially since we didn't even see how powerful this Captain Jovan is

She had no one she could rely on growing up in harsh environment.
Everything that happened, she achieved it on her own, therefore, she doesn't easily trust others, implying she's close to a neutral relationship with Denys.

When most of the members left, as also mentioned by the head chef, she was trying to bear all the responsibilities by herself, being the new leader.

Then the money offer came from the prime minister, which was a one time opportunity. She had to put the guild's existence on the scale against Denys and Jean.

I'm not sure if they were on debt, but I remember she didn't want to let her members experience what she had gone through while showing a scene where she rummages a trash can for food indicating an imminent need for money.

In her mind, as the new leader, her obligation is to prioritize her members before any else, which led her to siding with the prime minister and abandon the other side of the scale, which is Denys and the others.

At this point, she got too fixated on bearing the duties as a leader, but when she faced the head chef, her heart was stirred by the head chef's freedom, despite bearing the same kind of responsibility.

The determination she had just somehow... lost... and Jean told her to follow her heart.

Katnage, or whatever his name was, was the last straw. She followed her heart and realized her mistakes of trying to shoulder everything and reaffirmed how comfortable it was to be with Denys.

I'd personally say it's not a bad writing at all. Just need a bit of empathy of putting yourself in her shoes.
The issue though is that it could have been protrayed better, like the whole thing about her reasons was obviouslly blackmail yet spends so much time portraying it as a mystery resulting in her being emotion less for 90% of the time. Another thing is that we got a lot of powerful allies on the MC's side and the only thing we have to know about Jovan is that he is in control of knights which seem to apparentyly be fodder for both the MC and his mom, I assume he's levek 100 combat but the MC has powerful allies so like its not a big reason to not team up with him

It's not a blackmail though. She was forced to, due to situations, but not threatened, until the minister revealed that she wants to coup. That said, she could still refuse the job offer, she had a freedom in that, but she didn't due to her being too fixated in shouldering responsibilities.

There are not many powerful allies on the mc's side. Captain Jovan has enough forces to topple the kingdom. Even Jean almost lost to Katie. If they have level 100 combatants, Denys got no chance. There's also Denys's brother who is most likely stronger than him, which I assume is in Captain Jovan's side

The stuff regarding the captain again connects to how it could have been portrayed better, because a lot of this is just assumptions from the audience

Even with general manga like DBZ, we had Raditz to get a sense of how strong the saiyans and even Saibamen were because that dude almost killed both Goku and Piccolo, a gives reason as to why everyone had to go through harsh methods to get stronger

You're missing the point entirely about Katie. The betrayal happened because she lacked something essential, which is necessary to create drama. Without that vulnerability, it would just be a typical, boring shounen story about the power of friendship.

However, you can't have a character act illogically and betray others without proper motivation. That's why I said it wasn't bad writing. She had her reasons, shaped by her nature, which made her actions plausible.

The readers were expecting her to stick with the usual shounen nonsense about the power of friendship, even though this approach is much more realistic.

I’m not saying the betrayal and return itself was bad writing

But the writing doesn’t do much to help the audience empathize with Katie’s logic as it doesn’t focus on a lot of info

Resulting in a lot of mixed reactions to her return as it relies heavily on assumptions

Also I haven't read the light novel but they probably include more info so it might be better there
