What should be marked as Hentai?

I think that Hentai is Hentai, there are sex scenes censored or not genitals etc. The thing is there are some series that aren't safe for work... like Shishunki na Adam or even To Love Ru, Yuuragi no Yuuna-san etc., in Shishunki na Adam there are even some sex scenes but still it's not a hentai... I think there should also be a categor NSFW or something.

Hentai is hentai. When is ecchi hentai.

How about everything or mostly smut should be marked as hentai, having the smut tag indicate that it's not full-on sex scenes only?

A story with sex = smut
Sex with a story = hentai

there should be a page somewhere that explain what all tags mean and how they should be used here on mangadex to minimize confusion and mislabeling
maybe a read and accept type page before anyone is allowed to change or upload mangas

Yes, more specific tags are an absolute necessity.

Ideas for rating manga...

The below three would fall under the category of NSFW/R-18 and should be under filter? This is regardless of visual censoring. i.e.-Just because they dont show actual nipples doesn't downgrade the rating.

A story with gratuitous frontal nudity and/or strongly implied sexual acts = mature (e.g-Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san, Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari, Princess Lucia)

A story with explicit sex scenes = smut (e.g.-Shishunki no Adam, Parallel Paradise, Domestic no Kanojo)

Explicit sex scenes with a story = hentai (basically, porn)

---------------------------------

A story with gratuitous cleavage, bra/panty scenes, shower/bath scenes but no frontal nudity = ecchi (Rakudai Kishi no Eiyuutan, Hatsukoi Zombie, etc.) This would not fall under a filter.

Maybe there could be a "NSFW" setting/genre added? This could be used to cover anything that probably shouldn't be "seen:" on work computers, or in public area (libraries). This would be a catch-all for not only hentai/smut, but for extremely violent stuff as well. Of course, in the end it is still up to the reader to decide if they wish to view the title or not.

I think there should be different levels of NSFW along the lines of what bane_ecf said. I would like to add a warning section for certain titles like movie ratings.

Example: NSFW for gratuitous gore, full nudity, sexual violence, futa, excrement/piss (looking at you Ureshon!)

Ecchi is like PG-13 lewd and isn't really NSFW due to censoring and no explicit nudity but it's a gray area. However, certain titles like Yuuna and Tu Love Ru are VERY NSFW...

Mature is like an R rating with the territory to match. Gore, nipples and mature themes. Sex is censored or heavily implied but nothing over the top is shown. (MonMusume, Goblin Slayer, Berserk)

Smut/Hentai is NC-17 and you know exactly what you are getting into. (Lilith's Cord/Brawling GO!)

Regardless of the technical definitions of 'hentai', the whole reason to filter it out is to avoid NSFW stuff. Anyone who wants to avoid hentai almost certainly wants to avoid 'smut' etc as well, and anyone okay with 'smut' etc is probably okay with hentai, or at least with also having hentai visible. There's no reason to subdivide sexual NSFW categories and allow filtering out some but not all.

Subdividing NSFW based on why it's NSFW (and, arguably, how NSFW it is) is worth doing, though.

Correct. I would like to see one universal flag (currently the "hentai" flag) to automatically filter out NSFW content, regardless of how hardcore the content is. It could include excessive gore if that's what the developers feel is appropriate. In my example above, hentai, smut and mature are all sub-genres that would trigger the universal flag. Ecchi would not.

I think one tag to cover them all would be best and take away any second guessing. Multiple tags mean some people might tag some terrible stuff less because in their opinion it isnt bad. Less tags the better, it keeps things simple.

To some degree you can do it based on magazine of publication. Stuff like Ureshon! and Shishunki na Adam are published in seinen mags (Goraku Egg and Comic Valkyrie) and shouldn't be tagged as hentai, regardless of how lewd their content is. If its legitimately hentai, its most likely either published independently (easily verifiable) or published in a dedicated hentai mag (Comic Kairakuten, Comic Hotmilk, etc.).

Do a 1-5 scale of lewdness.
We discussed on Discord what would be essentially a 0-3 scale (as well as alternative options) but that would all essentially be dependant on tag filtering capabilities.

there is a difference between erotism and just the purpose of sex, Hentai is used for the latest and ecchi for erotism, while there are some borderline hentai they are called "borderline" for a reason thus still at ecchi level, instead another nsfw tag should be Gore and be separated from hentai.
