Unless a confession (Kokuhaku 告白) has occurred, and a positive answer has been given, you can't really say that you're in a relationship. The date when this happens is then used for the entire "Dating Anniversary" thingies Japanese like to do at 1 month / 1 year, etc

This is why in the Divorced Crybaby manga, the MC got asked by his little sister about "Who did the confession", which then made the MC realize that he had to do one.
