I guess he thought "in for a penny, in for a pound" and decided to retaliate against deadly force with death blows, since it's too late to hold back.

The "nani?" is a fine joke, but maybe not for a serious situation like this? Kinda undermines the tense atmosphere. But still, huge thanks to the editor, readability went from "barely understandable" to "satisfactory", maybe even "good".
