I'm surprised he didn't ask if the orb at the church reveals anything besides level information. He didn't want to reveal his status due to the pranks on his status. I'd have to read the earlier chapters, but I seem to remember that adventurers could check their status and I think that was at the church?

I can't remember how Yajin detects these informers. I guess they're paying attention to him and trying to get extra information on the new guy and he can sense that?

Well, I'm still confused that there was a guy in a random fishing village that was beyond his level cap (unless I misunderstood) and way beyond the other villagers. (I mean, how'd he beat a sea monster that was that strong. Things are already way more dangerous at sea, since you're depending on a boat and you're dealing with a strong monster with ridiculous stats, so that seems difficult.)
The random guy in the fishing village was above his level because of all the high level sea monsters they've killed.

to be fair, we live in a (relative) safe modern world where be kind and helpful to other is the norm(allegedly), even toward strangers
but the setting here is equivalent to early medieval period, people of this time struggle to survive, they don't have time and energy to help others without anything in return (maybe except family and close community, but definitely not to a stranger)
Please do me a favor and look into xenia and the laws of hospitality. It absolutely was expected and the norm that if you were a stranger, people would at least try to treat you semi-well.

Now, I'm not saying that this manga should be equivalent to real life our medieval period. Quite the opposite, in fact. There's no need for it to adhere to real life social expectations of hospitality, even if it does feel fairly unrealistic. I just don't like people claiming myth as reality for history. Medieval people were not filthy, drab-colored barbarians. They washed, they dyed their clothes with reds and greens and yellows, and they had social expectations that you would be treated well so long as you treated others well.

man just do some low ranking quests to get some travel money and get the hell out of this corrupt town, keep going town to town until you find some place worth actually staying in.

Yeah honestly getting kinda tiresome already.
I'm on the fence.

On the one hand it is boring how so many other isekais have people instantly fawn over the MC, on the other hand it is also tiring when everyone is out to fuck over the MC.

I think this series would definitely benefit from more occasional breathers where the MC just gets to do his thing and make a little progress without having the world beating down his door to fuck him over.

To be fair MC did first murder a noble (even if guy and his son both deserved it) and then kept going to places where that crime wouldn't be much of a problem , or where authorities wouldn't find (or wouldn't care about finding) a wanted noble-slayer. Those places can have more insular societies than usual. But yes, it's a bit overdone how everybody is so hostile.

Many people were travelling around in real medieval times, especially when it comes to cities, and news of who and how treated guests would often spread far. That said, if you looked like a fool who can be easily parted with his money, some people would try to take advantage of you, just like today being average western tourist will get you different treatment in most third world places from someone who knows local culture, how to behave and speak with the local folks.

So this is why city states got dissolved. No wonder.
City states got conquered. There are still some existing city states, though. Singapore, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, Liechtenstein, and Bahrain span all of the old world. Djibouti could probably also be classified as a city state since outside of Djibouti City it's all minor settlements that exist as glorified pitstops for Ethiopians trying to sell their goods at the port.

I think what really would've made the series better is giving the MC a party like other Isekai stories. They don't have to fawn over him or anything, but just having traveling companions that he could bounce off of to show character progression would be enough.

This is like how Adol gets a new party in every Ys game and then leaves them behind to go adventuring.

The problem is that Yajin is a physically dangerous person who looks and to some extent acts like a bandit. Some people in the story did treat him well despite that, but I doubt it would be the default response in any era.

I do agree that "everything/everyone was terrible in the medieval period" stereotype is wrong, however. People have not changed that much since even the hunter gatherer period, ie, more or less the same concerns and attitudes people have now.

To the folks confused at Yajin's poor treatment or the guild's "figure it out yourself" attitude, I'd recommend reading the WN, as it's pretty thorough. It's on Syosetu and Kakuyomu, but Kakuyomu seems to be the author's preferred platform (updates are there first).

A few things to keep in mind.

A) People are really racist here. Most have never seen someone with an Asian appearance. Several people assume that he is a cannibal, something he leans into later to be more intimidating. His own status has him with the titles of "monster" a "new kind of goblin".

B) Adventurers are stateless people. They aren't considered citizens of the cities they live in and aren't protected by most of their laws. The stereotype of an adventurer is someone who either can't hold down a real job or who is a criminal fleeing another jurisdiction. They are effectively the lowest caste of people wherever they go, and the only reason they aren't openly despised is because they tend to be armed and violent.

C) The adventurers' guild branches only very loosely cooperate with each other. In particular, smaller guilds don't bother raising up and investing in their members (such as by maintaining a library of monsters/herbs/etc or providing training) because successful adventurers inevitably move to larger guilds.

Now, you can disagree on whether the premises are plausible, but the WN rehashes these themes basically every time someone is a dick to the MC, such that it's beaten into your head.

I'd agree that gathering information is a vital skill, but I'd argue that it's in the guilds' best interest to provide as much information and assistance as humanly possible in order to complete the guild requests they have.

It's honestly rather weird. It's like some merchant or noble came in and said "I'd like to make an official request for some Komar herbs, (or whatever they were called) since I can't buy any from the available merchants, and I really need them"

"Sure, can you give me a description of the herbs in question? Or a drawing?"

"No! That's your problem now!!" *leaves
I think this guild section is corrupt. Or they rarely rank people up. Theres something in it for them.

I think the chapter is fine, it's just how long we have to wait in between each chapter is agonizing, so a chapter like this which only really serves to paint the world and systems related to that world can feel boring or lackluster.

They're trying with Puppy, but it's not there yet.

Does puppy need to transform into a loli for that to happen?
Ugh, no. I mean while he does have a good relationship with Puppy, and we've seen Puppy pull him back from the edge, Puppy doesn't currently offer the kind of bantering/comradeship we need to give a proper respite from everyone wanting to fuck him over.

As others have jokingly pointed out, it feels more like a setup for the world to fuck him over again.
