Really into it honestly I think the protagonist is walking a fine line but him being like ridiculously cynical makes it go down better. And I think the sincere stuff is pretty sweet.

Definitely dig the pseudo-cynic and constant narration of "DON'T FALTER STAY THE COURSE", so I kinda hope this goes for a bit and lets him continue floundering and trying to act cool before he fully figures it out.

Sounds like he's been hurt repeatedly and learned to trust no one. He thinks he won't be harmed as long as he keeps everyone at a distance and never exposes a weakness. It's a common setup, quite relatable, actually.

Yeah, when you're a pessimist and see something that looks too good to be true, you can't help thinking 'what's the catch?'
You can tell he's thinking hard about it. He almost wants to give her a chance but he's sure it's a bad idea, because come on, who would suddenly take interest in him of all people without an ulterior motive? You know, that is a good question - what would she want from him - and she seems semi-hesitant to get closer herself, too.

I am curious if his position in the first couple pages of chapter 1 (that putting up his own emotional barriers makes him incredibly skilled at sniffing out deceit) is accurate or if we eventually see he is completely delusional about everyone else in his life like (early) Watamote.

Like a popular male classmate thanks him for letting him borrow his notes and he is thinking to himself that he probably is smiling because borrower and his friends just got finished mocking their poor quality/penmanship before he came to school.
