Yani and Imoko have different fathers, and I would assume Shizue is referring to Imoko's here.

The only Thing I can think of is that he died later after Imoko was born and was away on business or whatever when Yani was born. It was not really stated that he was dead when Yani was born if I remember correctly only that Shizue needed to give birth to Yani alone.

All we know for sure is, Yani's father was gone when Yani was born. So that would mean another father would have been needed for Imoko. We assume this is the papa in the pictures in this chapter.

This is actually what I am thinking. While they could be half-siblings, it might have been a false lead that he was "dead" when it really meant "not there at that moment."

IDK how it works in Japan. But personally I have seen cases where the stepdad officially adopts their stepkid and give them their family name. Maybe it is something similar here.
