But is it me or does it feel like the author changed the direction they were taking with Ushigome looking de-escalating until backup arrived, and instead cut right to Hanako and Saotome appearing. From the previous chapter it felt the author was going with the cafe group looking like they would be able to resolve the situation on their own.

Honestly, wouldn't be surprised if the Ushigome angle comes into play somehow.
You're right that it seemed like her desire to have a fun and successful maid cafe was a pretty big driving force of the arc - especially last chapter.
At least the author has a lotof paths to choose from.

Yeah, the cliffhanger looks like she is going to interrupt Hanako erasing the punk's nose. She has been the best character for a while.
