And I'm ok with no poly ending, that's a lazy ending. This path will require Saotome to grow and choose.
Harem ending is lazy. Poly ending wouldn't be lazy at all. Having everyone involved work through feelings and conflict and arrive at something stable would be a huge and rewarding effort.

But it's also something the Japanese public seems very ill-equipped for digesting so we never really see it in manga. As a result, stories like these are either just a labyrinthian run to get right back to the conclusion implied at the very beginning (which seems to be inevitable for this story), or take the very laziest ending of a status-quo result where there is no ultimate progress.

There's also the rare possibility of an everyone-loses ending, but I can only imagine the reader reaction from that.

Honestly, Ushigome was always pretty wanton. It's not her suddenly changing, it's her finally growing impatient and feeling pressure of time. It was their last school trip and all of the girls were acting under pressure due to that. She was always quite selfish, it's just that for most of the series she was content with just coasting through the school and hanging out with her friends. We've seen her more selfish and driven side already during the second Culture Festival arc.
Let's not forgot Ushigome was the one who previously said she was okay with Saotome having multiple partners as long as she was one of them. She really wasn't depicted as so selfish until recently.

Not everybody wants a poly ending. In fact, most people aren't really poly even among the harem fans.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm actually considering her becoming more serious and less casual about idea of sharing him to be a plus. She's been building up the determination to actually do things besides goofing around for a while now.

A poly ending is not realistic is fantasy and imo lazy. (Is just imo)

To make saotome ( a pushover guy) to grow mentally to really go for what he really wants requires a skilled writer
Specially since he made friends with most girls.
This ending also requires everyone to work through feelings and accept that sometimes those feelings are no reciprocated. And you can eihter walk away or be friends.

I assume you mean in this case specifically (where there are tons of characters involved) and not in general. I feel that if the author didn't keep introducing new characters it may have been feasible, but we're up to like 10 occasional love interests and it's a bit silly. And also I just couldn't see some of them ending up that way, personality-wise.

Is it wild that I thought at first that this chapter was some kind of fan parody? Those pages of Saotome's imagination feel so out of place from what we've seen so far, lol.

Anyway, Ushigome's ship is about to sink, quite deep. Poor girl.

$100 says he doesn't reject her. Something will happen to keep it ambiguous and keep the story going another 500 chapters. I'm finished with this, maybe I'll pick it up once it ends

edit: in case anyone was curious: yes, I've had this image since 2007 when I saved it from a discussion thread about the replaced episode

That took an interesting turn, if only something as edgy could happen for real. Also, would a stab from a box cutter at that length actually do anything? i doubt it would even cut through the cloths
