Sora's entire character and story felt incredibly ham-fisted right from the start. It was difficult to read because of how over-exaggerated it was. Then this guy shows up and they jump the shark. I knew a bigotry and/or bullying story was inevitable and it feels like this arc was included just to get it out of the way so they could say they did it. The reasoning both characters gave for their opinions and actions is completely ridiculous. This arc was so poorly done that I'm surprised it didn't kill the series altogether, especially seeing as the main characters are already a couple anyway.
