Well, Van isn't a normal 4 year old dhampir. Also, they didn't know where he was, let alone if he was still alive.
This is a typical case of "would've worked if the target was normal".

That aside, I love how Van practically just went "You wanna be closer? Ok, let's cuddle." when he heard Tarea's thoughts. XD
Not sure if he's "abusing" his childlike appearance or if he's just that simple to begin with.
