Often times it's even worse than that, people get mad at a character's stupid action instead of being mad at the author that chose to write it. The anger at bad writing gets displaced...

It's particularly bad to see way too many readers criticize a female character and then conclude saying stuff like "why are all women like this?" or "all women are like that", completely ignoring the fact that the female character was written by a male Japanese author that clearly has no real experience to draw from and is just perpetuating tropes that help selling his shitty manga or engaging in his own fetishes.

There's also something to be said about actively seeking the same shitty tropes over and over again just to be mad at the characters that are portrayed with those tropes. And again, these people get mad at the characters, not the authors, and then extrapolate to the real world.

I say let people like what they like as long as they are respectful to those who don't like it. I never get people attacking others for liking something that you don't like unless they are making liking it their entire personality or are jerks about it.
I admit that I do enjoy trash and garbage stories at times.

Though I will admit that I find it weird when people read and watch things just to get angry. I only understand hate watching when its to make fun and riff of the bad media; not to fuel some weird rage you get at it.
