I believe in the previous chapter someone explained how killing Psyche would disrupt the relationship between the church and the empire. The prince could pin this on the current emperor, forcing him to step down from the throne. From there I’d assume he would try to “undo the evil” caused by his late father and gain the support from the people. (With the idea that he can’t be worse than the previous ruler)
At least that’s how I see this could play out. He could have another motive altogether but this is the only reasonable one I can think of (assuming of course the people don’t demand the execution of the entire imperial family)
