These are not independent people living their lives, but puppets on strings dancing to an author's tune. This is no orphaned child swearing revenge on the immoral bandits who slaughtered their village, but grown assed adults with a high degree of training and mystical powers and abilities. This could have been like in Shang-Chi, while pregnant (or protecting a kid she hid nearby) she took on several of these bandits, and was taken down with numbers, these two just being left behind to finish them off while the rest spread through the village.
It's not so much that I can't see how something horrible could befall the community they chose to settle down in, it's that both the Sword Saint and the sister would be in such a situation where they would both be in mutually in danger, yet separated in such a way that the cowardly hero could only save one from mundane bandits.
It all just feels so forced. Everything from the mundane looking bandits that are attacking the women, their relative positions to the returning hero, to the fact the sword saint was so easily overpowered.
