So far as this chapter goes, there's nothing horribly abusive about them. Or even abusive at all. Just that their ex-wives are extremely greedy and angry that they can't get the money for themselves. Except for the guy that sold his wife into slavery, though even then the money thing remains true.God, this protag is just being dense. "No, they may have been horrificly abusive husbands, but they were nice to ME!" I hope he stops being a stooge.
A lot of people here seem to think "The money was for both of them to spend as they see fit". That's not true. The money was for the families, their husbands' are the heads of their families and also far more likely to be responsible with it and use it for the family. The very fact that their wives wanted it, half, portions, whatever, makes it pretty clear that they had no intention of using it for their families, only for themselves.
Maybe their husbands could have as well, though from their success and wealth they obviously used it wisely, but that's less likely from someone who didn't demand getting some of it for personal use, who is guaranteed to use it frivolously.
Paying that guy's debt, though, was extremely stupid. Especially after what he did to his wife. But, also because the money used to pay for it is better spent on your new family and its future. Charity is for after you and your family is secure. Definitely not when you're starting out together.
