God, this protag is just being dense. "No, they may have been horrificly abusive husbands, but they were nice to ME!" I hope he stops being a stooge.
So far as this chapter goes, there's nothing horribly abusive about them. Or even abusive at all. Just that their ex-wives are extremely greedy and angry that they can't get the money for themselves. Except for the guy that sold his wife into slavery, though even then the money thing remains true.

A lot of people here seem to think "The money was for both of them to spend as they see fit". That's not true. The money was for the families, their husbands' are the heads of their families and also far more likely to be responsible with it and use it for the family. The very fact that their wives wanted it, half, portions, whatever, makes it pretty clear that they had no intention of using it for their families, only for themselves.

Maybe their husbands could have as well, though from their success and wealth they obviously used it wisely, but that's less likely from someone who didn't demand getting some of it for personal use, who is guaranteed to use it frivolously.

Paying that guy's debt, though, was extremely stupid. Especially after what he did to his wife. But, also because the money used to pay for it is better spent on your new family and its future. Charity is for after you and your family is secure. Definitely not when you're starting out together.

Honestly, I kinda see MC's side. It's very common for a child who didn't face abuse but the partner of the abuser did to not see the abuser as a "bad" person

Holy misogynistic take, Batman.

Most of this argument ignores the previous chapters. They already hint at them being terrible people for reasons other than money.

Keep in mind, the money in particular was highlighted in this chapter because Ceres was trying to give money to the ex-husbands. Ceres was trying to gift them support because he only knew the good public personas the ex-husbands presented. He thought he'd unduly burden them with financial hardship. Our heroines here were just setting the record straight on this topic.

Traditionally and generally, women would take care of the household budget and would handle all the money matters. It wasn't until rather recent (1950s-ish) that men wanting to be more controlling over their wives started holding onto the money and give their wives nothing more than a pittance. Of course, this varies by culture and timeframe, but it's rare that the husband alone would handle the finances. Our heroines here expressed that they thought they would be able to work it into the family budget for the family to benefit, or at least get an equal portion for their enjoyment. However, the ex-husbands hoarded the money and other capital to themselves. Only the ex-husbands got to enjoy what was supposed to be for the family.

Ceres paying off Zector's debt was extremely smart. Now Shizuko has the opportunity to exact a more satisfying revenge rather than vicariously through the government.
