I don't think it's justified at all because I can't see this being a plot point that comes up very much from now on. The story is likely going to shift toward being focused on the girls going after Jin, and the whole 'defeating the demon lord' thing will largely be an afterthought.

That sort of reminds me of a certain mere 10-year journey...

TL;DR: MC's ability is "training others", making him a fantastic teacher, but only up to a certain point. Once the hero's party outlevels his ability to train, they all part ways amicably, with the heroes giving him a sizable retirement in the form of money and a territory to become lord of, where he starts putting his skills to good use by improving his new land.
