Probably because they are trying to write around the "absolute virgin" portrayal of mc in the source material. Honestly, the manga makes him much better(or well, "not insufferable" at the very least).

that advice needs some caveats. Not everyone expresses or responds to affection through gifts. Some are better with words and others with services etc. That said, gifts tend to work but more so if they show you're paying attention to the things she says, her current condition, or whatever. A cheap gift that's based on something she muttered or mentioned offhandedly awhile back will get you farther than throwing an expensive but generic set of flowers at her. Unless of course she's really into flowers but then she probably has favorites or would prefer ones with specific meanings etc.
