This part got me hung up too, so I double checked 37. Lloyd went to just be a trainee at first, and returned on a break after a year (of the total of 3 needed to go from trainee to full fledged) to find Cain missing at that point. It seems it was at the point after he couldn't find her that he volunteered himself to the Hero program.

So it just turns out that Cain went in first so she could be healthy and see her brother again.
They did say the first success, so that does mean there were failed attempts. My take would be that they did the experiment in mas on orphans an other who they could take without notice, rather than start on soldiers they put time and money into training. The aunt probably complained about having to "take care" of the sister rather publicly and it was a open secret she didn't care about her, making her a easy abduction target. That would continue till they figured out how to do the experiments. After that they then opened it up to soldiers, and he was probably offered the chance do to his relation to the one success.

Fun fact: the guillotine was developed to make executions less painful and messy. Beheading via sword or axe required having an executioner with the strength and skill to cleanly take the head off, there was always the chance to miss and hit the shoulders or hit a neckbone wrong and you've got someone wounded and screaming while you try again, to say nothing of other popular execution methods like breaking on the wheel or drawing and quartering.

So, nah I don't think we need Madame Guillotine for this case. This king doesn't deserve the mercy.
I'm thinking he should get some nice dinning on honey and milk, and be given two boats.

Good imouto, now, kill the king who's conveniently wrapped in yours chains, grab your bro and run away with his family. No need for unnecessary drama/friction between y'all

Seems his family just grew again. Wonder if the king will get lucky and he'll convince his family to just walk out without destroying anything.

Let’s follow the train of thought this king has for a moment, because I find it hilarious.

Demons are getting together and might pose a threat because that’s what happens when an oppressed group suddenly becomes significantly more powerful->kidnap random girl to experiment on her-> experiments work perfectly-> don’t put her out on the field, instead do more experiments on willing participants -> the only surviving participant is the brother of the girl you just kidnapped like a year ago -> send out the brother instead of restraining him and investigating why it works on only this family, or at the very least trying to figure it out subtly -> send him on a suicide mission -> he comes back alive, so you send him on increasingly dangerous suicide missions -> when he survives every single suicide mission you bring him into your capital city, have him sit within arms reach of you, and then show him that you kidnapped his sister and did experiments on her so he has an actual motive to attack you

Simply genius level planning from our king. Genuinely stunned that he had the foresight to try and drag the hero’s name through the mud before he executed the hero

Please tell me Cain later turns her back on the King. Like this whole time she was just testing her capabilities.

The king may have been ignorant to Cain and Llyod's relationship. And maybe Cain is only somewhat loyal. The King wanted a trained and loyal soldier who would follow all orders, not someone who might not do it.

He clearly learned of the relationship at some point because he very clearly alludes to their relationship towards the end of this chapter, and more vaguely references it a few chapters before this. So he’s known it for a minimum of a week, maximum of several years, but I’d reason that he would have realistically known about it after Lloyd successfully survived and they began to investigate why he survived when others didn’t. The other time it would be most reasonable for him to know would have been to when Lloyd returned to find Cain gone.
Since it’s this author and this quality of writing though Id bet the king orchestrated the entire thing like Reverse Flash lol

Seeing kingdom propaganda slandering their family surely ruined their unscheduled family trip to the capital.

NGL I am a bit disappointed that "Cain" turned out to be a little sister. Is Lloyd not allowed to have male family and friends? Well, it seems the girls have an aunt and not an uncle. I was bamboozled by Cain being a masculine name, "Keine" would have worked better for her.

So my guess is that Cain was sold into slavery by their aunt and found herself turned into a lab rat given she was sick and can not be put to work in ways that slaves normally do.

If we go by cliches Cain I feel like isn't going to survive long for some reason after this fight with her brother is resolved. I hope that isn't the case. I'd love to see their family continue to grow, although it's going to be a challenge for the writer to do something with so many characters.

Sharpen the blades of execution for this king.

Lloyd seems too deadpan to go berserk.
Although he did suggest splitting the ocean, rather than diving, to check the bottom, like it’s common sense.
