it stems from the fact he thought he wasn't perfect yet for her, she was the one who put that mindset on him, in my opinion it's more of the girl's fault but in the end they didn't properly communicate, it's been a while already and i don't want to reread but i'm pretty sure it was still because of her, he became a better man and much better than her and she still went away
