i wonder when isekais and fantasy series will finally entirely eat eachother and the point of having "japanese guy going to another world" is completely lost in favor of the nearly identical "kinda weird guy already living in fantasy world"

And that's why the OG Familiar of Zero is still the best in this regard. Saito throughout the entire anime is fighting to get back to his world, and even at one point in the future seasons has to come to terms whether he wants to stay or not. Such a shame that the anime wasn't as good adaption as the light novel.

On the one hand it can be done to make the reader identify with the MC more or it could be to explain why the MC has knowledge from modern day Japan.
Typically it's done to give the MC an overarching quest (go back home, take revenge at summoners, explore a brand new world either out of curiosity or to enjoy a life the MC couldn't have in modern day Japan).

Especially if escapism is the goal, it's not necessary to reach back to stuff from the original world.

I like the Medieval European aesthetic of course but always the same gets boring.
