They'd buy a book on grammar for the new language (he doesn't need one since he already speaks it) and then a bible of their religion in the new language (since they know it by heart, and even if not then the translators will usually be very careful with religious texts, so they can cross reference easily) and then they'd learn (to read) the new language pretty fast.

Except it doesn't work if you are Jewish - no matter what language is spoken in your country, the bible is always written in Hebrew.

Well, that leaves you not knowing it by heart, but you can still buy a protestant bible in your native and the new language. (As well as maybe Tolkien or Harry Potter or smth - not as perfect or easy, but the base principle remains solid)

The idea of bringing forward an industrial revolution to an agrarian society just tickles my autistic brain.

It also means that as a merchant, you don't NEED to learn another language, as you have people who speak your language all over.

Rich life definitely possible. Just give it hundred years of cultural, economical and social growth and ample natural resources and it's basically in your pocket. Would help if you are in position of power, but alas.
Also feel sorry for educators that don't know children learn faster.
