Thinking about it it makes perfect sense Brifron's didn't expect this. For him, a bog standard sorcerer and Archdemon, Zagan's "Entourage" would always be a weakness. That Zagan actually would share secrets and "teach them" is something he wouldn't even consider because a normal mage would never, ever even consider that except maybe for their most precious students. And even then they are disposable.

I don't know the latest fate of Biffrons since I hadn't read LN after vol 6 (this arc adapted LN vol 5). But if my memory serves right, Biffrons isn't dead, because

That's not it. He did die and with no possession/power bank shenanigans but it was sort of through his own victory over Zagan. They were sort of having a competition to see who could save Nephteros' life as her clone body was deteriorating. Bifrons could make a perfected body for her with what he learned from another archdemon who he allied with him and Zagan was fighting at the time and Zagan had developed a form of heavens phosphor that worked in reverse, creating matter/life from mana. They needed to convince her to go through one of the procedures. What it ultimately came down to was that Bifrons was willing the take heavens phosphor and let it slowly kill him to finish the procedure. This isn't really to say that Bifrons is a good guy but that his conflict with Zagan is about how differently they view the role of 'archdemon'. While Zagan was focused on the battle and making sure Nephy and the others are safe, seeing himself as a king of sorcerers, Bifrons was willing to die for his research, seeing himself as the pinnacle of sorcery researchers.
