Have you heard about white album 2 I feel like hikari really represents setsuna tho not childhood friend but very setsuna coded
The author tho just hates childhood friend
So, uhh, the author hates childhood friends, and this is why he makes a manga about the childhood friend who is similar (well, not really) to one of his favorite heroines, who was not a childhood friend?

Yeah seems like it taking out his frustration on poor Hikari

I don't know where the whole "Maruto hates childhood friends" thing comes from, because that just doesn't seem to be the case.
Bro trust me I've read many comments from many sources saying the novel author Maruto hates childhood friends like Twitter reddit and this manga is a prove of it why are we here if he hadn't made this dumpster fire

I got through half the comments so maybe someone mentioned it, but why does everyone think Yami initiated the kiss with Yuu?
It would seem weird that she kissed Yuu only to then slap/yell at him?

My take is that Yuu started the kiss, Yami got into it enough to wrap her hands around him only to then realize what she was doing.

Does Yuu suck for not being honest? Yeah he does.
But we are missing too much information and so can only guess at this point.

I do think that it's over between Yuu and Hikari romantically, and probably as friends.

It's not that hard, just reread chapter 21. The slap came before the kiss, not after. And her leaning in for the kiss is shown with the panel of her feet movement.
If you are still not convinced, here is that segment from the WN:
That voice. That figure.
I see her all the time. Every day.
Maybe even more often than I see him.

"Shut up already, Yuu!"

The girl I knew so well moved.

She wrapped her hands around the boy's head -- the boy she'd just slapped -- and pulled him down.
Their faces, over ten centimeters apart in height, closed the distance, and her lips pressed against his.

"Ah... ahhh..."

Maybe this was just one of those moments -- awkward and private -- something I wasn't supposed to see. A coincidence that I stumbled upon it.

Just mis-remembered that scene so thanks.

That moment was so dissonant between my own understanding (she texted her john Hikari's name and appearance to set up an awkward but also quite threatening interaction in a public space) and how it was presented in the manga ("lol, now you have to turn him down for me, glhf, womp womp") that I spent like 30 seconds pondering the logistics of it (did she like, make an account for Hikari on a paid dating site?) before deciding I didn't know enough about the specifics of compensated dating and rolled with the manga's tone.
I just figure she'd been texting the customer already and sent her Hikari's photo and name to identify "herself". This assumes whatever account she used didn't have identifiable photos, which seems like it would make sense anyway

Excerpt from the novel:
Early September.
The sun had finally set completely, and the breeze brushing against my cheeks carried a hint of coolness at last. It was just past seven in the evening at the station roundabout.

Hikari: "Ugh… hic… sob…"

Right there, in such a crowded place, sitting next to me and bawling her eyes out without a care for the stares around her, was my younger classmate—Shirasaka… uh, Hikari?

Yami: "Come on, enough with the crying already…"
Hikari: "You—! Y-you're the one who did something so awful, and now you say that!?"
Yami: "It was just a little joke… I was watching over you the whole time, wasn’t I?"

Ignoring my heartfelt(?) words of comfort, she just kept sulking and pouting like a total brat.

Hikari: "A little joke!? Th-that was just a little to you!?"
Yami: "Ugh, you’re so annoying."

Well, okay, fine—in this case, I was 120% in the wrong.

After getting my hands on her photo and name, I pulled a little… well, pretty malicious prank and registered her info on a sugar-dating app.

Then, in less than a minute, messages started pouring in. I played along with some random guy, arranged a meet-up, and left her standing alone at this station square… Yeah, thinking about it now, that was seriously messed up.

I deleted the account right away, but if someone had already saved her info, it’d be a permanent digital tattoo. And if word got out at school, one of us would probably get expelled.

But… that’s just the kind of person I am.
And she—she’s the kind of person I can’t forgive.

Hikari: "After putting me through… through something so horrible… if my whole view on love gets warped, it’ll be your fault, you know!?"

She’s bright. Like, sunshine bright.
Stupidly innocent, overly friendly.
She doesn’t even try to put up walls—not even with me.

Yami: "What, Class Rep… you’ve never done it before?"
Hikari: "Say 'never been in a relationship,' you jerk!"

And worst of all—she’s pure.

If I don’t hate someone like her, then who can I hate…?

Hikari: "Why… why’d you do something like that?"
Yami: "Because I can’t stand you. That’s why."
Hikari: "And how do you feel now?"
Yami: "Fantastic."
Hikari: "Really?"
Yami: "…………"

Yeah, right.
As if I could feel good making her cry.

Her furious glare stabbed into the side of my face, relentless.
But in that gaze—there was no hatred.
Just anger. Pure, unfiltered anger.

And I knew—this anger wouldn’t last.
I could already tell she was fighting with herself, trying to forgive me.

Yami: "…Sorry."
Hikari: "O-okay…! I’ll forgive you in five more minutes! Hic… sob…!"
Yami: "I said I was sorry, geez…"

Ah… I see.
Now I get it.

This girl—she just made me think, "I hate her."

Me—someone with no hopes, no dreams, nothing.
She made me feel something negative.
Made it so I couldn’t stay indifferent.

God, what an idiot… this Class Rep of mine.

Yep, like both of them less. Like clockwork. WN Yami is like if cancer thought it was too cool for school. WN Hikari is exhausting, but obviously way less offensive to my being than WN Yami.
man this writing just seems so BAD gah

Um, anyway, thank you(?) for enabling my self-harm.
I guess it does make it way more amazing that I actually LIKE the manga.

So like- I see alot of people point out white album 2 as to why the author hates childhood friends but is that really the ONLY example??? If so that doesn't seem much like a trend to me yet just a single example single we don't really know how this all plays out yet

The problem I have with this author and this situation is they are being incredibly vague about the important details to make us come to the the worst case conclusions with just enough vagueness to defend their actions. They want us to assume the worse so they can pull back later.
Don't worry, bro, we're due for an Aitsu no Kanojo update, and those always help keep this one's sloppiness and ever-accumulating pile of unresolved mysteries in perspective! It could be so much worse!

Hikari can be exhausting and yeah "a bit much" but is still a very sweet and kind person

Yami is kinda just not a great person a lot of time and just plain toxic

To put it another way Hikari is like a dog who doesn't leave you tf alone even when you yell at it but really loves you ALOT

Yami is like a cat who knocks over your vases for no reason other than "fuck you"
Hikari licks your face at 6am because she wants to potty, Yami gets behind the TV and pushes it to the floor.
