Thanks for the update, and even though it is short it is always fun to read.

Now the sad thing about this DMCA is that it happened years ago on another site that everybody used to upload on, so they all jumped onto MangaDex and now it is happened again.
For me the real problem why they hit hard this time is for pirate translations making people pay for chapters and MD saying it didn't break the rules, sad to say MD has had it coming for doing nothing.
Anyway like i did last time when i jumped onto MD years ago i guess it's time to go to the next.

Bootlegged scans and scanlations provide costs and benefits for rights-holders.

The costs are from people who would otherwise buy the content substituting the free content.

The benefits are from people discovering work by way of bootlegs, and then buying licensed copies.

Lots of the second behavior relative to the first incentivizes the rights-holders to tolerate the bootlegs. Too much of the first behavior relative to the second, and the rights-holders take action.

Foot-stomping by the greedy substititors after it's too late to start buying is risible.

As the credit page states, it's been a good ride with Mangadex but we are pulling out.
It hurt so much when I saw over 40 chapters that we've worked so hard on, just get Thanos snapped away. this series survived but who knows for how much longer. So we are moving to comick for the time being. Uploads will also be available on reddit on r/manga.

IMHO it just seems like something they created to cover their own ass. I wouldn't be afraid of MD taking down your content themselves without a DMCA notice from the copyright holder (which is, historically, pretty rare). If you are worried about being sued or something, I guess it can't be helped. I doubt most distribution sites make you claim you are the copyright holder, which I assume would make you culpable for any supposed damages if the copyright holder tried to sue (which I do not think has ever happened to a scanslator, but do not quote me on that).

This seems to make sense. If this is their way to avoid it, then it also makes sense that they can't outright say it themselves since it'd be self-reporting.

Yup. Every site can be hit with a DMCA take-down demand.

I think that, from here on out, things are going increasingly to look like whack-a-mole. And, since rights-holders can find sites as quickly as can would-be readers, the suppression of scanlations will be increasingly successful.
