That's what worries me. He slept for three years last time despite only sorta exerting himself; with how much power he consumed this time, it could potentially be decades.

Which would absolutely destroy his conscience when he wakes up, because it's entirely possible that the elves would refuse to help without being able to meet the great spirit, which could lead to everyone else getting wiped out. He could very well wake up to a (figuratively) smoking ruin around his lake.
