I don't think there's any point in trying to make sense of the lore. That went completely off the rails last chapter. It's more something to read for the atmosphere.

My theory is that it might be that way from the start, then a revolt broke out, now they have equal rights to eat each other. Just take it as it is and don't try to make sense.

So this chapter was certainly… an experience, huh? The audacity to ask the dude you’re eating what their life was like. Truly, just incredible. And then the fucking cognac fountain

So here’s a fun fact. I know someone who knows a lot about cooking and food prep, and i thought i recognized the leg with the meat wrapped around it, so i asked them how long it takes to prepare saltimbocca, properly, assuming you’re starting from scratch (as you must be, if the person on the table is actually the ingredients you used).

Six.
Months.
Minimum.

So. Either they’ve been a somehow-more-monstrous version of a brain in a jar for the better part of a year, or the author just pulled some random fancy foods and didn’t bother to consider how long it might take to actually prepare them.

💡 What if they started out as sick/dying/infirm human elites? Seems like as long as you arranged things so people would reeducate you on what your deal was afterwards you could use the goat thing to get a new body. Definitely not a sure thing but rich and powerful people have done a lot of dumb stuff in pursuit of immortality.
