I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Count is on the same level of Earl but Count is used in mainland Europe while Earl is used in Britain.

I don't get it either.

Yeah that's weird isn't it?

Odder still the word "Earl" is based on, "Jarl" (Skyrim players' ears just pricked up) has the femme equivalent "Jarlin" but somehow that didn't make it into the UK. IMO Countess for femme Earl just feels like a cop-out because "Count" already exists and is a higher ranked peerage than "Earl" in Europe but apparently isn't used in the UK.

Honestly though I couldn't blame anyone writing Isekai for getting all this shit confused.
