but whats up with the portrayed almost mood-swing like expressions between panels
i mean, one panel MC is crying, then next panel after that, hes all proud and brave, i mean, at least try to show he just cried would makes sense no?

That's because the author is trying to portray a less than 10 year old kid having depression and survivors' guilt. Depression affects your emotion especially you will have irregular mood swings very often, and it's not something that you can control, they just come and go.

Caught up to the latest novel chapter (c522) after reading the manga and
no, so far at least, tho the MC joked about it for a bit.. The family dynamic is the highlight of the series for me. The mother, while having a whacky personality, is the stand-out character of the series. She fights at the front-line with her sons, protects them, guides them when they're down, very chill (no pun intended) but can be serious/wicked when needed, and is still the strongest magician of the party.
