I so hate wings on the back...there just aren't enough muscles to actually lift a humanoid with wings off the ground otherwise, the best spot is merging with arms extend further downward and out, just like a bat but a lot longer.

On the back though, wings require extra back muscle specifically for flight not just slap wings on the back and be done with it like this.
Since wings on the back are inspired from biblical angels... we're just not seeing their true form.
But it does look a bit silly "realistically", but reminder that magic is often involved with winged humanoids.

Naga fully exposed while wrapped in tentacles, but obscured by the squares of darkness that crush hopes and dreams.

We were so close to greatness. :meguuusad:

If you're set on realism, then it does not matter how they are built into you. You'd need a wingspan of about 10m to realistically fly (less if it's just gliding). You're not going to be able to flap those with any of your body's muscles.

Thats why she needs magic to use them! Its like you weren't even reading smh my head
I will take you up on that and gladly smack your head instead! Dummy!
Just like Tinkerbell and general Disney fairies that need a magical dusts to float (cuz wings are not enough to generate lift), same thing with this one. It's just Magic.

I'm talking about practical design. If you guys just add magic and make it work, you deliberately ignored my point here.

Angel and fairy is a bad example, they can have wings and they can be anywhere not necessarily just on the back, they don't even need to be connected with a body for all I care and can float with zooming speed. I can even bet whoever that perceived them didn't realize their full form because dimensional difference or they deliberately want to be seen that way, from the description and most of the pics I saw were like looking into a kaleidoscope even.

To be fair, with enough practical muscle power rules can be overridden! But just like the simple physics of why a boat can float effortlessly due to buoyancy, adjust body weight with air sacs throughout their body, then add gas is that lighter than air or simply defy gravity with some mechanism, it's possible to lower the requirement of wings size for a humanoid to be able to fly.

Also, don't forget the tail, dragon tail even!

At that point, why not just use a hot air baloon and skip the hassle? Given the size of those gas sacks you'd need to use to make a real difference, it's not much of a step up. :pacman: As for "practical muscle strength" - sure, as long as it's magic, some soft sci-fi or anything other than realistic, really. When you take off, just like a bird, the amount of air you'd have to move with each flap to generate enough thrust is more than our own weight. It's why you'd need such huge wings in the first place. Unless you can juggle barbells, you're going to fall flat on your ass every time.

Sorry, but I don't see how a tail helps, rather than just being more weight to lift.

I believed everyone can fly with a style, if the wish is strong enough, life always finds the way.

When you talk about hot air...I think it's a good idea too! Let's add body temperature into the mix, from what I checked. Heating a pure hydrogen balloon without introducing an oxidizer (like oxygen) will not cause it to burn or explode.

That is a step up for sure. But I don't wanna do math right now, so I kinda don't know what size I'm looking at combining with wings and what else maybe lacking for a proper humanoid flight.

Just gotta believe in and keep looking for the possibility! Or failure that matter.

Also, the tail is for stability controls, and it's beautiful. I like long and sturdy ones by the by.

So you do know how a human-sized object could fly?

Please be "not that deep" as in you have an idea.

It's already unrealistic for humans to have wings, so I'm describing how to optimize humanoid flight with less magic as buoyancy to reduce the weight and practical position of wings, believable and looks cool, yeah gotta keep the look.

Feel free to agree/disagree, but don't be vague.

I feel like...damn! Aren't "Magic" and "Sci-fi" such a vague excuse how impractical stuff came to be, can't we fix that with explanation some how?
