I thought this was gonna be the introduction of an unnecessary, annoying pet monster but it immediately became interesting with the thing being able to speak Japanese and all.
Hope it distracts the guy from suddenly wanting to be a cartographer for some reason.
Dude was given extraordinary physical abilities but he just decides to run around and make a map of the place instead of learning about the people or the world or just fighting monsters.

Don't worry the mandatory annoying pet mascot was a 1980s and 2000s trend... Hopefully.

It's a exclamation point. Whenever it appears within actual dialogue, (rather than just alone) its transcribed in the furigana as one. You can see this in the cover, for example.

Anyways, on page seven, the term she uses for the dragon is in the shadow creature's language, but it still seems to generally follow the usual language's phonotactics. (It's represented in their syllabary immediately after, after all.) So it's probably a loanword.

Maybe more interestingly, though, is that its written in the textbox with a shadow-character rather than the typical syllabary we were just introduced to in ch11 or the alphabet that was hinted at at the end of the same chapter. And the other girl doesn't seem to know the term, as while she does repeat it, she does so in the syllabic characters. (Also, I assume "jaa mi jaa" is "what is that?" or something of the sort.)

The fact that its been adapted but isn't recognized seems to suggest that this language is used outside of just this one village, and that Myaa learned it in that "outside place," as she knows the term. And I assume that that place has more of these dragons than this one, where they seem to potentially not exist.

Well, going back to that chart from before, it looks most similar to (part of) "oupu", which the other girl also said when she corrected another villager. So, I'm assuming it means something like "idiot".
But then again, nothing on the chart really matches perfectly, so who knows.
