Using ballista to try and hit something that could fly over mountains is hilarious. 500 yards is the maximum effective range for those ballista shown on the picture. 500 yards while yes is pretty far, it isn't all that far in comparison to a plane, 500 yards is roughly around 4-5 football fields. Meanwhile a normal carpet bomber plane flies around 2000 yards in height, maybe 800-1000 being charitable because that is the minimum height for small planes. This is ignoring the fact that in Chp 8 he also flew his plane all the way to the top tower beyond the clouds too. Clouds are at a height of around 2166 yards,

This witch and her simps about to learn the terrors of modern warfare. A small taste of it at least.

This is also not factoring in the speed of the ammunition. Cold arm projectiles are subsonic. Even if they have the range to hit aircraft, the shooter will need to lead and the pilot will need to be asleep. Either that or there needs to be so many projectiles that the pilot cannot evade.

Even for most of WW2, anti-air guns were extremely inefficient in downing aircraft for similar reasons. While the rounds could reach the required altitude, supersonic rounds still required a few seconds to travel. Prop planes move at such speeds that a few seconds might mean a hundred yards difference in position. That's why we see not only volume of fire being important, but also timed explosions, which broaden the effect of each round.

Ultimately, proximity fuses solved the WW2 anti-air issue by sticking a tiny radar into an anti-air round; this meant the crew didn't have to guess and manually input the timing of the explosion. All they had to do was shoot close enough to the target, and the round would explode when it came close enough to the plane.

Of course, jet propulsion would overturn that meta again because planes would be too fast for a gun. that's why radars and SAMs are used these days for taking out modern jets.

the MC's plane on page 8 seems to be the straight-wing CAS type. slow-flying in modern combat terms, but still ungodly fast for cold arms. that dinky medieval artillery isn't doing a damn thing.
Ahem. Counterpoint: Magic 🌈🧞‍♂️

No reason a ballista couldn't simply be the initial launch system for a rocket-powered, magic-seeking bolt with a continuous rod warhead that neatly bisects his glorified glider. Well, except for the fact that they're all idiots.

Seriously, though, a siege weapon's "500 yard effective range" would be measured against fortifications (literally hitting the broad side of a city) or massed infantry formations on a ballistic trajectory. Shooting literally anything down? You might as well throw rocks.

Especially because the ballistae pictured can't aim up at more than like 45 degrees before the body hits the aiming platform.

Counterpoint: limitations of magic and what is shown on the art.
We have no idea how far there development of magic is and how expensive such a resource is.
From what I can see from the artwork on that ballista I can see men "cranking" the bow strings back, its seems to be a near 1 to 1 to our ballista IRL. Well regardless of if it were magic or not, it still proved ineffective against our MC. :ROFLMAO:

You make a good point. I never thought that once he flys directly above them they can't do shit.

Yeah, the immediate and anti-climactic capture of the prince's party robs us of a rematch where they learn from their mistakes and use other siege engines to fling wizards at his little plane, which is a shame.

Do not forget Allen also has the blessing of the Wind God so he can easily just overpower any anti-air strikes against him by shifting it's trajectories. it's one of the key reasons why Allen is able to fly and stay in high altitudes safely in the first place. there is nothing they can do to stop him from flying high above and simply just dropping charged explosives on them like he is doing now. The sky is literally his domain and the only one who can stop him when he's there is the Wind God himself or someone else who was blessed by the said Wind God (of which there is none who would oppose Allen).

Even if a rematch occurred. Not much he can do when MC pulls out a glock, and give the prince of simps and his posse of rejects the double tap treatment. :ROFLMAO:

Shooting dragons with a ballistae worked wonders in GoT surely shooting an even faster moving smaller target will work too!
I mean in universe they don't have any of the information that we have as the audience so its a kinda logical, didn't work out for them though.
well, dragon needs to fly low to make sure the fire make contact. meanwhile allen can carpet bombing at higher altitudes. sure that dragon can fly high but their breath effective range are much shorter. plus, modern plane are faster than dragon too, they have no chance against Allen.

he had ranges and air superiority. not to mention higher fire power compared to ballista and catapult.

I would also guess that the 500 yards range is horizontal range and not vertical which would be lower.

Would also think the accuracy would drop drastically even if the arrows could reach the necessary height. Large surface area and high altitude winds are a great combination

That pretty much means his tech is higher then modern era. Well kinda. It's like putting an energy shielding on a carpet bomber.

adding on to the fact that he can fly faster, has longer range, has anti-anti-air defenses, while having higher firepower, none of them aside from Amy have ever seen what a plane can really do and even then Amy only half comprehends it as she is a normal civilian before her reincarnation (the other time he used his plane he was not flying as high so they didn't know the full extent of his abilities because he didn't need to go all out nor did he want to reveal all his cards at the time). they were cooked and had no chance.

Indeed, wind resistance and gravity would certainly be a factor in their effectiveness, but as Essensue here has stated the ballista can't shoot directly up and stuck angled at 45 degrees. So really... 500 yards is me being very generous, assuming if they could aim vertically upwards. But as everyone here can prove even with the generous estimations. They stood no chance of even touch him, and the panel showing how quickly the battle ended is pretty accurate. Ballista are heavy, and difficult to move, require entire squads to operate, making them easy targets for carpet bombing.

You forgot he was struck by an poisoned arrow from the empire and only survived thanks to a talisman?
