The short answer is social Media. The patent is from like 1993, but it got big through a combination of YouTube videos, media coverage and mass copycat manufacturing (including 3D printing).

At that point I hadn't watched any anime before in a lot of time. Didn't get to watch more animes until a few years later

The last war arc was fucking hype. All of the fucking translator speedrun it. 30 minutes already english or 1 minutes after its on CR scrapped.
