Type 89s are still being issued and used by what would be frontline combat units of the JGSDF.

In fact, here is a JGSDF soldier from just January of this year, 2024, in a joint Japanese-U.S. exercise with the USAF 36th Airlift Squadron.

The guy pictured here is part of the JGSDF 1st Airborne Brigade (the Narashino Airborne Brigade) which are one of Japan's premiere infantry combat brigades. Like, if anything happened that required combat mustering in Japan, these would be the first guys going in and they are a well-trained and prestigious unit.

From what I understand, they're like the equivalent of the 101st Airborne or 82nd Airborne stateside. And they're using issued Type 89s.

Some special forces units (like the Special Forces Group that is based alongside 1st Airborne, but is a different unit) or the Rangers get to play with extra special stuff or new things like the Type 20 or M4s, but they also have a specialized mission set.

Keep in mind, it took decades for the Type 89 to replace the Type 64. And that's despite the Type 64 being... well... lackluster to be frank. And the Type 89 is a perfectly serviceable rifle. Lack of rails and accessories and optic mounting for the most part, but it beats the hell out of the Type 64 (which couldn't even reliably cycle NATO-standard 7.62x51 from what I've read).
Imo type 89 wouldn't be replaced until 2050

I don't see it lasting that long. It might still technically be in armories, but not even the Type 64's in JSDF service would be as old as that (Type 64 production continued until the late 1980s).
Same case for the type 89 can be made since the last orders were made on FY2018 budget

1) Full-auto is not the 'do more damage' setting; it's the 'send more metal downrange quickly' setting. It's purpose is to keep an enemy pinned down, not put more holes in a single target. Speaking from extensive personal experience, accuracy drops considerably, even with 5.56mm cartridges. With a rifle as comparatively short and light as a Type 89, it's even harder. Granted, the ogres were at pretty close range, though.

2) Half an hour to heat up canned rations seems quite excessive. Heck, even if they were canned completely uncooked that still seems like a long time. It only takes a few minutes to heat one up, like four or five, and the little burners that (sometimes) are issued with them only heat for like 8-12 minutes or so. Getting an entire thirty minutes for food--the whole meal, not just heating alone--would be a luxury to most soldiers in the field.

Other than these nitpicks, I quite like this series so far.

This manga is lying. Canned rations aren't delicious at all. Fucking propaganda can't make me suspend my disbelief that much
