Forgive me, stopped taking the story seriously ages ago, but why is she this tortured soul again? All I remember is she hates her Mom and she got her own place from some bullshit with her parents.

Only thing I ever gleaned was that almost all the negative events in her life were almost entirely her fault, save her Mom sucking. I imagine it'd make readers less angry if the portrayal wasn't so realistic. I think a lot of us know someone like this- where the solutions to their problems are quite literally in arms reach, but they like to throw a pity party instead so they can convince themselves they're a victim. They LITERALLY don't want to be happy.
If memory serves (and people will correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe Yami's story is something like this:

Her father dies and her mother remarries. Yami's stepfather tries (or succeeds) in sexually assaulting her in addition to I believe cheating on Yami's mother with other women (I might be mistaken about this part). Yami runs away from home and stays with friends for a bit and then decides to do sugar dating to make money to survive. Her first time doing this is when she meets Yuu. Cue her adventures with Yuu. During this she confronts her mother about what her stepfather has been doing in the hopes that her mom will side with her and kick the stepfather out. Mom fights with stepfather and eventually kicks him out but immediately regrets it and wants him back. Stepfather refuses to come back. Mother attempts suicide. Yami feels guilty about all of this and blames herself. Yami feels she doesn't deserve to be happy with Yuu since her mother can't be happy with the stepfather. Yami ghosts Yuu.

Go back and read it again. Hikari’s already won. She’s allowing them to have this special moment together (they’re in “the palm of her hand”) but Yuu is hers. Yami knows it’s over.

Started aggressively skimming, totally confused as to when that got dropped since I didn't remember. No fuggin wonder I don't remember- all that lore got dropped on a single page.

Still, gonna be that asshole and say she ghosted Yuu for no genuinely good reason and she has a penchant for self-sabotage to an absurd degree. I know people that got some pretty dogshit spawn points, and they've risen above it all. Not everyone does obviously, but my pity and compassion only run so far before I go "what the fuck are you doing?"

After thinking about it. This whole manga feels like a basic FMM love triangle getting flipped on its head and gender reversed. Yuu is the indecisive Female lead; Yami is the complicated, family issues, noble idiocy trope Male Lead; and Hikari is the perfect, no issues, no struggles, golden child Second Male Lead.

I think there's good odds that Maruto is writing a looped tragedy wherin Aya fell for and now won't date Yuu b/c of Hikari and Hikari fell for and now won't date Yuu b/c of Aya.
I dont get it, are you saying thats what maruto building towards for when yuu is confessing to either hikari/yami in future chapter?
Cause as of now i dont think their friendship is the biggest factor for either of the girls really in regards to why they wont date yuu.

I do think by this point in the story Yuu has definitely made his mind up, so this talk with yami is either a "getting some closure" type of conversation (more likely imo) as you said in a previous comment or this is the "lets try once again" type of conversation (less likely imo)

So unsurprisingly a really shitty shojo drama romance plot is still just as shitty when the genders are reversed.

Honestly the best ending is really Hikari cutting ties with both of them, moving on, and finding better friends and a better love interest. Realistically though, if Hikari wins she'll always be playing second fiddle to Yami while the latter continues to wallow in a pity party for her self inflicted problems, while if Yami wins Hikari will get to be the depressed losing heroine who never really gets over Yuu. Either way the likely endings suck for her.

Unlike in the manga, Yuu spends some time acknowledging that what Yami is going through is harder than anything going on in his life and then praises her for managing to go back to school.
I think the important part was that Yami hates being pitied by him. I think that's why she refuses to tell him why she even ghosted him in the first place, even though he seems to have caught on to that to some extent.
Edit:
Conversely, I hate that in response to Yuu blaming himself that Yami says it has nothing to do with him. Like, girl, come on.
This part was intentional: she first says "But now I'm slacking off again. Because of Yuu.", but once he says he really is to blame, she immediately goes "it has nothing to do with you" since he took the blame where he shouldn't be blamed.

Would be pretty surprised if hikari didnt appear next chapter really
The chapter title has "just the two of them" and the next chapter is going to be part 2, so I'd assume Hikari either appears at the very end of the next chapter or doesn't appear at all.

During this she confronts her mother about what her stepfather has been doing in the hopes that her mom will side with her and kick the stepfather out. Mom fights with stepfather and eventually kicks him out but immediately regrets it and wants him back. Stepfather refuses to come back.
This part is wrong. Yami tried to tell her mother about the stepdad trying to assault her, but she refused to listen, and that was long before meeting Yuu.
When they were dating, Yami found a lawyer who helped her dig up some dirt on her stepfather (including cheating and owning that condo she hid from them), confronted him about it and made him ask for divorce, which her mother didn't take well.

So, this chapter confirms Kamiya, I mean, Ayami, is a Christian girl? Seeing all this of "we should have praying to the Lord Jesus right now". Her being Christian would explain a lot about her inner mental processes.
Remember guys, Yami wanted MARRY Yuu.

why again do people think that yami is scum?
Because people sees yumi as a toxic and destructive person with manipulator-like monologue thinking and behavior. people sees yumi as back-stabber where she tries to snatch yuu from hikari. Despite knowing the yami broken background, it's does not justified yami for her action lead to her now. People don't feel sympathetic which a shame imo, as someone who rooting for hikari, grow a liking toward yami as a a characther since her inner conflict and strunggle in choosing either her friends happiness or her unresolved feeling towards her ex due to miscommunication.

However people tends to forgot, the core plot and the unexpected plot twist drama (striping the earlier part of the rom-com interaction) is basically a story about main mc (hikari) have a crush/love on her friend ex (untintended) thus the title "It's a Little Late, but I've Fallen in Love with My Childhood Friend". This story about a positive & happy-go-lucky Hikari handle with romance, conflict and miscommunication and how to response to them.

What my expecation of this manga endgame since i feels like manga about to hit the end. Honestly either 2 way:-

  • Yami finally letting go her unresolved feeling towards her ex since both of them broken up without a proper communication. This serve a growth to her character development in then toxic/broken behavior due to her family background which she can finally move foward. As for now yami is very dependent toward in her life and she is not truely honest with her feelings

  • Hikari letting go of her childhood friends since it was really too late to fallen in love with your childhood friend but strengthen her friendship with yami since the manga is basically about fallen in love with her friend ex. This shows maturnity of her on-going personality which already shaken during plot-twist reveal and slowly to recover after disccused with yu.

But in the end of the manga, Yami and Hikari will still be friends.

Unexpected twist endgame (wishfull thingking) :

Harem. While the vibe and the setting of the manga does not indicate harem, knowing hikari personality with love both yu (romantically) and yami (friends) despite the conflict, she would opt for harem route for yu. lol.

I don't know if he confesses in a future chapter or if he's hoping one of the girls makes the decision for him.

Neither do I, I think right now the biggest factor is both girls are refusing to make the decision for Yuu b/c doing so would leave them always feeling insecure about his attachment to the other. ETA: which might be why they reject him even if he does confess.

Which right, Yuu got into this mess by going w/ the flow and the only way out is making a decision. I dunno if Maruto will go the path of he can't so he loses both or he unequivocally chooses one or neither.

Yami's real problem is that she delivers a lot of mentally embarrassing, edgy monologues, but when push comes to shove, she usually behaves like a normal teenager reacting to her dysfunctional life. Only at the cultural festival did we actually see her act like the homewrecker she was supposed to be. In fact, I have to admit that I think Maruto has toned down Ayami a lot compared to what she promised to be in chapters 22-24. Yuu really fixed her, lol.
To make comparisons, her two direct inspirations (Ai Kamiya and Kazusa Touma) at least had a real NTR arc where they attempted to commit infidelity (Kamiya) or actually committed infidelity (Kazusa).
In short, mangadex's great trauma with Yami is that she committed the terrible crime of having premarital sex with her boyfriend in love hotels while they were both underage.
With Yami and Yuu's revelation I was really hoping that the title "It's a bit late" referred to the fact that Yuu loved Hikari for a very long time but when Hikari loved him back he had already moved on and the story would be about how Hikari deals with the fact that she was too late.
I mean, Hikari had already dealt with that in chapters 44 and 46-48. Another thing is that Hikari surprised us a bit by revealing that she prefers a Yuu who is no longer a virgin and who does have experience, unlike the obsession of the entire Mangadex with... male virginity.
I remember reading somewhere in the comments that Maruto sensei wants to write a new variation of White Album 2 & at this point, I believe them.
Half a new variant of White Album 2, half an "if route" for these two characters, which, to be fair, doesn't help that this MC and this second FMC were already based on Haruki and Kazusa in first place:

She heard a lot Unravel and got crazy until the point to put Unravel as background music when she was fucking Yuu in love hotels.

We're just a hair's breadth away from Yuu offering the threesome in a non-ironic way, we the people trust you, boy.

I don't get it. I think I used to, at some point, but now I'm just confused.
