Aww, poor guy, Murcia seems like a great guy who really loves and cares for his little brother, and always wanted the best for him. It turned out that he was a pawn for his dad, like his little brother.

Maybe it would be better just to go to Van's territory, make a name for himself, and give his dad the middle finger like his little bro.

Damn the King did put him in his place.. firmly and forced him to accept the truth that he is WAY too hard to his sons. Now his punishment is to see his sons doing far better than he ever will do. that is humilating for him. good. i hope that he LEARNS from this damnit.

My mind keeps getting wrapped up in this story's alternate telling where the Duke murders Van for not being an elemental mage.

Would he expect to get away with it in the first place? Van was a well-loved and renowned prodigy within the territory, beloved by all the maids, and personally tutored by the head butler and head knight. Then, during his magic appraisal ceremony, he mysteriously dies? And it's a closed casket funeral since it would be obvious at a glance that he was killed with a sword in a room where only his father and brothers are, and only his father was armed? And the duke expects to say he died somehow and nobody will question it?

That's just asking for the rumor mill to blow up in a hurry. If the king is regretful about setting up elemental magic as 'necessary' like he's said, it'll almost certainly lead to swift investigation and reprisal.

I don't fault the father for anything but a mis-judgement of priorities. His house is falling apart because he values his standing over his legacy.
A competent but un-ambitious son can survived and beget an ambitious grandson. A competent son dashed aside in favor of an unpracticed but fiery son will kill a house down to the root. He hardened his heart to the point of dulling his sensibility.

Objectively, a loyal skeptic is healthy for a rulership and the king was just bullying the marquis with his authority at that part.

But also, fuck this guy. He has no care for his sons and got carried away to the point of making conflicting arguments. He's ultimately petty and small-time.

Rather than supporting Van, I'm pretty sure the king just saw a genuinely caring family member of Van's who cares about him and is stuck in a hostile environment. Even if Mercia was basically incompetent, just putting him with Van would make both siblings happy and earn easy brownie points.

Let the brothers reunited. They could learn so much from each other. Then he can govern another city nearby. The Tale of Twin Cities that will never fall; The Last Bastions of Peace and Prosperity for All Eternity.
