i think he chalked her behavior up to the events that happened four years prior where he almost died. The reason Eleonore became the villainess in the first place, was because her beloved childhood friend dies in the original story.

I don't believe he is oblivious, he just feels incredibly tied down because of the position he is in. He is kept as her attendant/butler and as that position it is required to not get involved with her romantically (my guess) and that setup annoys me since the start since there looks to be no way for them to be together anytime as soon as he got employed instead of being involved as a outsider, unless he gets acknowledged by the family head

Nah youre overthinking it. Arc's just has a bad case of dense protagonist that even if romance bit him in the balls and had kids with eleanore hed think theyre just close friends
