I read it as he stopped it from activating to not keep the bullets inside his body.
Probably would have been better to have bullet laced in sleeping poison to explain him being knocked out.

Even if they managed to get into the castle, once everyone hears that shit unless they can fly or teleport escaping a castle is basically not something you can do.

Unlike how some old games depict them, those things are built like mazes with people everywhere, there's just no way to get out without bumping into people, did they kill a ton? And escape from the super dragons lair? While making all that noise?

Escaping from there while carrying hostages too, it might have been easier to fight a war against the army than doing this shit.
