I wonder if Akou and Unjo will come back into play in the future since it said they have no other abilities at this stage. Probably when Kaoru and Hinata are in this form more, they will get more used to using Yokai energy
I saw that as well, we know both of them have high spiritual energy, and Dara invented a new technique which we've seen her do before. Knowing Dara she'll perfect it till there pseduo-yokai. We've seen her channel her powers into bodies before after all.

Dara is a gentle soul forced into becoming a curse creature, to hell with her sister and the snake.
I'm with you about her sister, but even Yazeka have it's own circumstances.

The girl did nothing to deserve any of that.

This going to sound hard, but is her consumption of the impure (carrion, mainly her father's) is what turned her into a Oni, even if she didn't know, that was her punishment, at least she didn't turn in a preta

You know... this is the second time I've seen Onis being described as people who "indulged" in cannibalism and turned into monster, I always thought they were... "demons" of sorts, but... now that I think about it, I am wrong.

They are like wendigos, but I do think there are other "types" too.

Well, the word "Oni (鬼)" does describe multiple entities. There's the more demon-adjacent kind from Buddhism, who tortures the souls in hell, there's the more ogre-adjacent kind from Japanese folklore (that's the most frequent representation in pop culture) and even other ones. The cannibalism angle seems to reflect the belief that the gods could transform criminals into Oni as a divine punishment. I mean, in most cultures, one of the most taboo act you could commit was cannibalism.

But that's just speculation on my part. I'm not a trained folklorist, so take that with a grain of salt.

Kinda sad for the oni girl... But glad the father and daughter situation is solved.

I bet there's going to be another appearance of those two in twins form in the future with snek starting his own shrine and fan club.

Kinda interesting that Dara san was able to retrieve what remains of that oni daughter and give it to the mother. It would be fun to see them again if the Misogiya family took another trip outside the territory.

i felt genuinely sorry for the Oni, but it is what it is ..
there is a vast fascination i harbour for japanese mythology and folklore, and this is right up that alley alongside Natsume Yuujinchou, Okami and Nioh.

wonderful art alongside beautiful spirituality.

How can she be blamed for what she did unknowingly?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni According to this, there is no mention of eating human flesh turning one into an oni, so this seems like an adaptation of the myth. Wendigos however do manifest when one turns to cannibalism. Still, the story of the Wendigo is more of an allegory against selfishness, considering the First Nations value community instead of individualism.

I don't think "blame" has anything to do with it (hence why Dara showed her mercy by only exorcising the oni part), it's more like the IRL reasons against cannibalism; the prion disease you may contract from doing so doesn't care whether or not you knew what you were eating, only that it was eaten.

Ya almost maintained an air of mystical reverence, Kaoru. Almost.

The designs for the familiar forms looks really cool. This mangaka is so good at drawing in a wide variety of genres. I wonder how wild they can go in high fantasy settings.

People tend to forget but if your help is abusive, you're likely to drive the one your trying to help into the arms of manipulators who use kindness and sweet words to get their way and do terrible things.

Loved the messenger transformation, that was cool as fuck.

Yeah. I have no doubt the mother meant well, and she certainly loved her daughter, but those methods backfire very easily.

Hey now the snake has/had it just as bad and didn’t deserve the pain it suffered (inb4 backstory makes you wanna join the snake cult)

Sin of ignorance, perhaps? I don't remember that being an aspect in Shinto, however.

...No, on second thought, ignorance is essentially the folly of most folk horror stories regarding youkai and what else. Nevermind.

All those branch families are making it a bit hard to follow. o_O
It's be a bit easier if you know some kanji for numbers. Basically there are nine branch families created from Jurota's blood, each took the word 十 (10) from his name to put into their family names, numbering from 10 to 90.
  • 十御田 Tomita (10) is the landowner of eastern mountain, managing Jurota's monument. Descended from Tomizo (chapter 42), son of a merchant in western village. When the branches were first established, they used their wealth to buy the land and distributed to other families so that Jurota's lineage would last for a long time (pretty much funding their entire extended "clan"). Tomita Kanna is the classmate who has a crush on Kaoru.
  • 二十尋 Hatahiro (20) oversees the Hirahiro shrine where the twisted arms are enshrined. Descended from the first Nagi (a.k.a. Mitsu). Hatahiro Saeko is the current Nagi, and Hatahiro Masatsugu is her guardian/uncle.
  • 三十木谷 Misogiya (30) oversees the forbidden ground (western mountain) where Dara-san roaming. Descended from Kisuke and Hina (chapter 47-50).
  • 四十八願 Yoinara (48) maintains the ward at reverse demon gate. Descended from Tsuru, a disciple of the first Nagi who learned the 48 external techniques of Hatami style. They're close to the Hatahiro since both are families of sorcerers. Yoinara Keita is the exorcist who runs candy shop as side-gig.
  • 五十子 Irako (50)... not sure what they do. Irako Miwa is the neighbor lady who drew for Kaoru.
  • 六十里 Tsuijufi (60)... ditto. Tsuifuji Shiho is the school nurse with a crush on Kaoru's homeroom teacher.
  • 七十刈 Nasokari (70)... ditto. Nasokari Akimasa is the elder head priest of Jofuku temple. Two of his children are members of the rock band UZ.
Still don't known (or don't remember) number 80 and 90.

Edit: add some more detail.
