but I bet when it came to the enemy soldiers he's a wet dishrag and didn't kill any of them.

But don't we see the dead bodies when he's talking to that assassin lady? One of them even looks like they lost a limb or were decapitated:

Edit: I wrote this before reading 1.2 and your comments there.

I will acknowledge I overlooked that scene.

I'm genuinely sick of the "I'm very weak, BUT I'm actually LE STRONG??!!" manga where everyone is completely oblivious except for the supposed "opposing faction"

Why does it matter if he's lying or not? His job was to stop people coming through and nobody managed to come through right? This is so dumb. Absolutely zero effort from the author to come up with even a semi-plausible reason for why the nation would turn on the MC.

Arne already trying to claim the bloodline…

He likes it in the prison. This would make for a funny gimmick: I Used To Be a Mercenary Soldier, but It Was Painful, So Now I’m a NEET in Prison. Beautiful Heroines, Please Don't Make Me W*rk Again!
May I interest you in Prison Life is Easy for a Villainess? But don’t read the manga, it’s just LN bait.

Really reaching with these kinds of starts, I get it needs to be absurd to add to hooks and reasons for why the mc has to move and get out of there but Im really tired of these "kingdoms" lasting more than a single year when every single sentient being with power has far below room temp IQ and yet any "good person" is oh so powerless to fix it. Not really about this series specifically just the trope in general where I might as well skip the first 3 chapters since not a single thing is going to matter and will be brough up again.
As a civil servant, I feel oddly at home when seeing a country governed by complete morons still holding out somehow because a lot a “good people” do whatever they can at their level to keep things going…

Oh, they're all so hilariously dumb!

Well, whatever, I am here for the half-elf girl. Don't disappoint me, author!

Yeah, commenters tend to sigh in disbelief at depictions of incredibly blatant incompetence in manga but I know even fiction is often outdone by real examples of horrifyingly destructive consequences of having actual idiots in charge of governments, militaries, companies, laboratories, schools and just about any large and important institution. Their personal assistants must be like daycare workers.
So I don't look down on this kind of characterization and their comedic aspect hits different.

Can’t really blame them: realizing just how many complete morons, blatant incompetents and sadistic sociopaths are in charge of ruling us is the fuel of nightmares.

It’s part of the reasons explaining my political belief that, as much as realistically possible, organizations should remain small and locally governed. The bigger an organization of any kind (government agency, company, NGO, etc.) becomes, the more it relies on hierarchical decision making, and on specialized sub-organizations usually working in silos, whereas smaller organization can still have a decision process based on consensus and people actually talking to each other.

The latter doesn’t necessarily yield the most effective results, and it doesn’t prevent stupid decisions, because morons are everywhere, and a bunch of people can make very stupid choices all together. But, when it fails, the scale of failure and the number of non-participants who suffer from the consequences of the failure are usually much lower. Comrade Mao has very limited understanding about how agriculture works? Tens of millions people dead. The eggheads at Brussels only understand farming in terms of “big = good?” The agricultural production of a whole continent goes down the drain and said continent is now reliant on foreign production to remain fed. Your local cooperative farm is run by urban hippies who never held a hoe before? Well they’re gonna lose a good deal of money and you’ll have to go to the next town over to buy vegetables…
