I think she means to retire. In manga, saintesses, priestesses and nuns are usually depicted as temporary functions that you can quit easily (much like Japanese miko), especially for marriage.

I'd like to see a fantasy story where the protagonist, or anyone, actively fights against the hidden demon of bad writing that brainwashes characters in to throwing away obviously useful and powerful allies.

They can still be evil, stupid, insecure, and abusive as they like, but when the most fantastical element of a story's premise is the bad guy's inability to exploit a resource they usually already have full control over, there ends up being a cascading aura of idiocy spread through so many characters just to make the story work.
