“I had a sad childhood so I’m homophobic” is definitely one of the backstories of all time
Actually... as ive seen someone else say this, and I to an extent see it as possible: I dont think this is homophobia, necessarily. Not saying she's innocent in any manner, she absolutely was and still is overbearing on her daugther, but I feel its more of an overprotectiveness spurred on by stress from past trauma rather than inherently homophobia.

If homophobia were the issue, Id imagine the reasoning for concern would go beyond hanging with a good for nothing (which in all fairness, PingPing does look somewhat delinquent-esque, so to someone unaware, she seems like the perfect fit for that descriptor).

Note, the mom was very hyperfocused on her grades, and the moment she notices the drop, she gets more suspicious and stressed, seeing those two kiss likely brought that all to a head, and she acted quite rashly to try and keep her daughter from potentially falling with bad grades, even threatening to kick her out, likely to make absolutely certain she is safe, even if thats obviously a very rash decision of which she shouldve at least attempted to understand better.

Let me again make this clear: I am not in any way stating this to say she is a good mom, she has a lot of issues that need sorting out, and the burden placed on her has clearly had a great effect on her with how she has acted, which in no way excuses what she does, just helps with understanding why she came to the conclusion she did.

I just dont see the homophobia personally, at best, a very overprotective parent with high stress issues acting out in order to, from their POV anyways, protect their kid.

I may be wrong however.

I think this is a pretty reductive way to view it, and quite frankly strange that this is what you took away from. She's homophobic, yes, but not out of malice. A woman who comes from a forced marriage with an alcoholic husband and a victim of child labor - do you think she would have time to reflect on queer relationships? Assuming this is set in modern China, Tong Tong's mother is more of an exception than a rule. Especially given that she was raised in rural China of all things.

Pretty great getting some more context into why Luxi's mom is the way she is. It's honestly really sad to see how much life has beaten down Luxi's mom, and that's why she's extremely negative and overbearing.

Hopefully, Tongtong's mom can help Luxi's mom come to reason!

It never excuses their actions, but I like knowing people's reasons behind their actions
It's always interesting to me

Thanks for the chapter!

This is probably the best way to put it. People tend to ignore the fact that its very difficult for a person to have little to no happiness in their childhood years experience or feel happy in their years where life may start feeling stagnant and powerless to do anything, especially since how luxi's mom was forced into a marriage she didn't want. Her parents didn't treat her with care henceforth she doesn't know what caring parents act like or how to properly give attention to luxi. She wasn't given any emotional attention, she wasn't taught how to do right nor how to properly communicate so she just imitates what her parent's did to her and thinks she's doing right. She's a person who has never had any outlets for her frustrations nor any peers who can properly communicate with her.

This doesn't mean her moms innocent, what's done is done no matter the cause and reasoning. However this should alleviate some of the accountability she has. This isn't malicious homophobia, it's ignorance and rigidness. As we just saw she's starting to show remorse even if just a little. She cares for luxi, she just doesn't know how to show it properly.
