There's something painfully annoying yet probably quite accurate in how she is constantly berating the Empire as being 'Evil' when it wasn't the Empire that started the war, they just happened to come out stronger, if I recall how the story generally is.
Girl, your dad probably also orphaned a number of Empire kids. Or he would have if the Empire was weaker.

I still love how they made Mary Sue the perfect little girl foil to Tanya. She even use powerful magic without a computational orb, amazing.
Master play to give her hair that turn into angel wings too.

It is always a weird feeling when I know that this impressive new character was introduced purely to prop up or as a reference point for another character, especially if they’re kind of likeable.
Mary Sue is not likable. She is an empty headed, entitled, emotional little shit...

I like the aesthetics and action of this type, how long will it take for the anime to get to this point? Season 2 is coming soon...well, I guess.
The anime and movie passed it AGES ago. The manga has an insane amount of original content. By the time we get season 2, the anima will STILL be beyond the manga.

I was talking about the Troubador…..
The way he cast spells with poems is kinda cool.
Ah!
Sorry.
I agree, dude was amazing. I loved all the Geneva suggestion spells he used, it is the first character that I saw and said "finally, someone using magic correctly!".

Interesting choice for the manga doing this... In the novel Mary sue is incompetent despite being given so much raw power, and was seen as more of a liability than an asset. Colonel Drake absolutely hated having to deal with her, especially when overall strategy or politics that went beyond the enemy immediately in front of them was involved.

She didn't accomplish anything and gets out maneuvered and shot down by Tanya repeatedly, and also getting Mary's allies killed when she charges in and disrupts formations and plans, sometimes directly too when Tanya uses Mary's firepower to friendly fire her own units by flying in front of them and baiting an attack.

She was also not immune to spells, she had a very hard defensive shell, but it can still be taken out with concentrated armor piercing attacks, or environmental attacks such as ones that burn up oxygen in the local environment.

No worries.
And I know right, the man is using a mix of “chemical” attacks combined with magic which represents the influence of human knowledge (and very much like the Empire) vs. the likes of Tanya and Mary which conjure miracles.

Will Mary be always drawn cutely/moe like this? Its so unhinged or should I say off-putting?

Not to sound like Tech, but I thought it was obvious that this guy was made just to powerscale Mary Sue, not that I think anyone really needs to be powerscaled next to her bc of her fucking name. The joke went over the mangaka's head I guess?

Twas the main reason why all the girls in the anime got duck lips, the og author did not like how attractive the mangaka portrays everyone. Though, despite the anime's attempt, people still simp XD

I mean, she’s literally called Mary Sue, after one of the most obnoxious tropes in existence. Were you all expecting her to be a likeable character?

I've vomited in my mouth a little bit reading this chapter 🤢
Preferred how they did slowly introduce Mary Sue in LN over this hamfisted abomination

I get the feeling that if the manga's going to be anything like the novel, Mary's usefulness beyond "throw her at the Empire's Ace-of-Aces" is going to fall off a cliff, though not before becoming initially celebrated. Mary's showing here might also be a special case, where her recent awakening of her power lets/causes her do things she otherwise wouldn't.

I agree he absolutely gave off those vibes. Here's this awesome dude we've never seen before and did you know that he's #1 in the Empire? He's super cool and super strong. Clearly a set up for the Worf Effect when you know he's about to go up against Mary Sue. That said I do not hate his addition to the world at all.

Since the translator notes mentioned he's manga original content, I just want to say thank goodness for OC. As a LN reader and anime watcher too this series is a rare time that I find the LN source to be the inferior version in most regards. The anime and manga add in so many characters to flesh out the world. The anime, now followed by the manga, has expanded upon the mages tools and how opposing nations have taken their technology in different directions. Every time you see a mage flying about using devices akin to flying vehicles, brooms, horses, armored legs, or skis you can be thankful for extra content because the LNs really do not concern themselves with these kind of details. As far as the books are concerned everyone is flying around like they did in chapter 1 of the manga.
