I haven't read the light novel exactly but I have read the web novel, so I can't exactly say what I'm about to tell you fully correct, especially since it's been like a few years or something. What happens after the MC shows up is that he uses that one black ability from his staff and causes it to span around the entire battlefield, essentially erasing everything that he seems to consider as enemies. Like I said, it's been a few years, so I might have gotten things confused and mixed up together.
