This is one of those moments where culture plays a huge role in what's going on and it's really hard to translate that. Getting married is an incredibly big deal, especially for more rural/conservative places like where Pingping and her mom are from. It's hard to describe just how important it is, like this is a country where getting married is so important that they have ghost marriages for people who died single.

Her mom's not intentionally being homophobic. She doesn't even know that her daughter is dating anyone, let alone that it's a woman. She even immediately acknowledges their relationship after she learns about it. This doesn't absolve what she does here, It's still bad. But she's not doing it from a place of hate. Every aspect of her culture has told her that this is what she needs to do as a mother and that cultural pressure is being represented by all of their other relatives.
