.... What ?

I really really don't think ppl use trebuchet to shoot down any flying moving target that is not a huge and slow zeppelin. In fact, I was thinking of more like ... javelins launcher; some kinda vertical missile launch platform.
What, like a hwacha? Could be better, but given the situation, i guess a mobile treb is the best van can think up on short notice. I reckon a hwacha would need a lot more resources just for the ammo supply it will inevitably burn. Also…that requires propellants (explosives)…

Okay, this is stupid. A trebuchet is really bad at aiming mobile units. Sure you can load the shuriken barrel, but there is a problem: the barrel rotate, so when it explode, the shuriken will fly everywhere. That's why it worked with the ballista: the barrel stayed in the same direction.

In fact, a catapult would be more efficient than a trebuchet to hit flying enemies because a trebuchet is slower, hence more chance to fire and hit with a catapult.

As for aiming: with a trebuchet, you fire your first shot, see where it lands, adjust in function of it. So yes, it can very precise, but it take multiple times.

Let's not forget that trebuchet need to be stationary, or else the aiming is off. Not ideal to respond to fast flying attack.

Trebuchets are mainly a siege weapon. Even as a defense weaponry, it wasn't the best, it could be used to destroy siege tower or distant siege weapon, slightly disrupt the formations, but that's all, the uses were limited. It was more like a counter to siege weapons.

The trebuchet is king of the siege weapon, but let's not give it the crown for everything

I came to see if anyone posted this yet and leaving satisfied.

You're all not really wrong about catapults and trebuchets not being effective anti-air weapons, but what you're forgetting is that Van has also invented the equivalent of flak rounds for them.
THIS. And its not just "razor sharp steel", its "otherworldly insanely sharp magical steel".

Normal flak would have been bad enough, but this shit will tear through ANYTHING. I mean his wooden ballista rounds buried themselves quite deeply... and that was just his magical wood.

Magical flak rounds are going to cut EVERYTHING into ribbons and I sure as fuck do not wanna be down range or in the same timezone of these things going off.

In almost any other situation i would celebrate the trebuchet, but as an anti air option!? Much more logical would be a large balista on an adjustable platform. As other people have mentioned Val will probably invent time fuze anti air projectiles or something, maybe even proximity based.

Wonder if they will even consider the notion that trebuchets aren't that great at launching things vertically...
Think that's more a question of the siege weapon's parabolic trajectory. Because depending on how the arm is set, the natural arc of the projectile will carry it a few hundred feet in the air.

For a better visual watch this.

Yeah, it's not a great anti-air defense option, but it's being fielded to launch an Anti-Air munition that's designed to just have flak just rain down on their positions, like the small barrel shown in Chapter 35 p24 (@Toloran ). You still need the mobile ballista he's made for "close range" anti-air defense activity, shooting them on their attack run. But for an anti-air siege weapon, it's role is more akin to blasting planes attempting to take off.

In that role, what you need is range, so you can attack outside of the range of enemy magicians and any immediate cavalry counters. This is especially important since they need to be attacked before their bombs can even accidentally drop on your troops. For his munition, you need the ability to toss more mass to cover more area. Since they can stay airborne for a bit, it allows them to spread over a larger area. So, far enough away to just carpet bomb most of the upper walls of the fortress with more dakka. And since it's also a danger to enemy troops, you can also just wreck any other defenders on the walls.

A trebuchet is a fantastic weapon but the one thing I wouldn't use it for is hitting something fast moving - especially in the air. I thought it would be a cannon of some sort.

Ahh, so that's what it's called. Thank you.
Yeah, a hwacha was my first thought about shooting down dragons. But I guess gunpowder is needed after all. Welp. :/

That is the case, but it also needs to build up speed. As the released projectile moves in a tangential direction from the moment of release, the release times when it goes mostly upwards is too early and the released projectile will lack speed.
Could be i have completely fudged my knowledge in how a trebuchet transfers its forse to the projectile, but as far as i know thats how it works.

I don't think that's how physics works... all velocity should be imparted at time of release. Well some might be gained as it falls, but the projectile falls in a parabolic decent. So it won't have time to reach terminal velocity before hitting the ground, or in this case, exploding and scattering the fleshettes. Tod also covers cluster type munitions as well in other trebuchet videos.

If we take bows and crossbow as an example, crossbows generally have higher draw weight. They aren't necessarily more powerful than bows though, and this has to do with distance the arrow/bolt accelerates. As crossbows generally have much shorter draw lenght they impart much less of their force to the bolt, than a bow to an arrow.

Some of the confusion in our discussion might also be due us thinking somewhat different scenarios. The scenario im thinking of is if the flying enemy is directly above the trebuchets+- maybe 30 degrees. Which is kind of where these wyvern want to be to drop their bombs. I can't see them working well as AA unless they are comfortably far away from the action. Probably the kind of scenario Van is aiming for though, but trebuchets as AA just is wrong.
