The best thing about Waku is that everything he does is for Minori's well-being and peace of mind, not to score points with her. That's exactly why he keeps racking up tons of points for future boyfriend/husband status.
This chapter has a ton to unpack. Midori's popularity is exploding and sooner or later that's going to cause problems, because it's going to be harder to hide her identity. We've had a first glimpse of what it might be like with the annoying customer. In that situation, we've seen Waku being a bit overzealous (we could even say jealous) in his attempt to protect Minori.
Thank you for the translation!

I real don't see what people are seeing, like sure the mom is living through her kid but it is nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be.

Like i don't see why she'd be called a cunt just yet.
What I'm gathering is that mom is being set up as an obstacle to overcome in the future, but she's hardly a toxic parent.

Mimori does not hate being a celebrity, she doesn't want to stop being Akarin or growing her career, and Mom is doing her best to allow her daughter some sort of normal private life while also supporting said career, including coming up with the "pretend she's your older sister" ruse.

Just this chapter, she finds a school with an acting program, suggests switching to that school to her daughter, and when Mimori is against the idea immediately relents and doesn't push any further. That is a good, responsive parent. A toxic mom would have pushed/guilt tripped Mimori to switch schools or more likely, simply informed her she was switching schools.
I mean Mom didn't even do the unintentionally toxic "Its what would be best for your future" argument.

I'm trying to not go full Mom Defense Squad because we haven't seen everything yet and I know we're being set up for some level of conflict on this, and its manga so a sudden heel turn is far from impossible, but the number of people projecting is nuts. I thought we were getting a serious heel turn from the comments, but its just mom trying to be a manager and a mother and being excited with her daughter (or at least she believes with her daughter) about her career prospects.

Reading the other comments genuinely made me wonder wether we read the same chapter.
I think its because Waka is considering how much Mom is prioritizing "Akarin" over "Mimori" and to be fair that's happening a bit. But I think we're being set up for a "Mom, Akarin isn't your daughter I am", so the author is definitely cluing us into the fact that not all the groceries in denmark are before their sell-by date.

Didn't care bout her daughter ✅
Objection, assumes facts not in evidence.

Mom has been shown being very concerned for her daughter and her daughter's public image/career but also isn't smothering her and providing her a lot of freedom without Mimori having to fight tooth and claw for it, more than we see from other manga to be sure.

I do think Mom is not fully aware of the growing sense of social isolation her daughter is feeling because her daughter is deliberately hiding it.

This is going to be a conflict point to be sure, but I feel the author has gone out of the way to show that Mom is not controlling or toxic, but is still drifting out of touch as her daughter and is focus on the goal and not looking around enough.

The mom has her problems, but the more we've seen the more it looks like she's doing this out of love/care to try and help Minori succeed, and in typical Japanese filial piety fashion, Minori doens't believe she can speak up against her mom's wishes/intentions because she has to be the good child and appreciate what her mom is doing for her.

We've seen small breaks and peeks that suggest the mom is aware of Waku and probably knows how important he is to Minori. And she has let up on some things in the past when Minori protests (like the last time it was suggested she not go to school. So I bet this all leads to a confrontation where the mom pushes something and Minori doesn't defend herself until Waku steps in and then it becomes a bigger talk about how Minori does want to be an actress, but she also wants to have a life.

Waku is SUCH a good husband, it blows my mind. He basically divebombed that one dude who was getting pushy about pictures. Champion. And the way he recognizes that Akarin and Minori need to be equally valued is soooooo goooooood!!!
