I think it's fine to have the old generation not know things, such as skills and magic, but the function of an item seems like exactly what the old generation would have figured out when first exploring the dungeons.
Still loving this story, but the Return Feather was a bit of a logical leap to make a gag

Patagia are what flying squirrels have. Those are wings.
Also, if it's got wings like that and can fly that well, it's not really an Owlbear anymore, it's just a fat griffin.

considering that they didn't even know the magic stone drop function. it understandable item with gimmick is unknown to old generation since they priorities survival. they definitely more adept to monster traits that it drops since having time to play with non equipment items is luxury already

A magic stone that required research and development to use, and a feather that's literally "Bend and drop" ["ohhh the bend and drop, works every time!"] are completely different situations
It doesn't ruin the manga, just a minor nitpick.
i mean, if it just like normal feather, how you expect people know it something work like a teleportation device when magic is barely know that time? considering how old the grandpa is, it feel like the dungeon happened before era of old school games. people know about it usually already seen one at least in concept. meanwhile this folk is just bunch of people from right before internet and probably more of brawl than brain people.

because, unlike a normal feather, it appeared in a flash of light after a half owl/half bear monster died. It's not like it was fluttering along a sidewalk in a park with pigeons flying around.
I'm just saying, if I killed a spider and the body vanished in a flash of light and a ball of lint appeared in it's place, I wouldn't go "oh, some lint. I'll throw that away."

We have to remember that the first generation was learning as they fought in the dungeon so anything they think is non-essential will be forgotten unless someone figure something out.

How Grandma took out the owlbear reminds me of how they used to take out large aggressive animals like bears and boars, except they usually don't move out of the way themselves, plus they had to have a crossguard on the side of the spear when hunting boars because the boar would just run down the length of the spear to kill the person
Maybe the artist just didn't understand the description and drew it like a fat griffin, there is a Web Novel after all.

Grandma is running ahead and fighting everything after all.
In fact, seeing Grandpa fight so much made her want to fight too.
Combined with the fact she basically camped out on a certain bridge to fight strong enemies, she might be more muscle head than Grandpa. She's Lady Goku.
other monster died by the same manner too. so considering the early floor drops is "trash" to them it understandable.
and you compared it with "i found random things in peaceful time with them fighting to survive in almost apocalypse states time. remember, unlike the usual troph where everyone know what dungeon and treat it like game system. this are old generation who first encounter it before anything was established and they dive in not because they think it fun, but because they must to or the world will be flooded with monster.
like i said, we thinking about game mechanism items because we have played or know about game before.
if we don't, we only learn something from trial and error. and with how dangerous dungeon is (plus no help from outside or even management), there no luxury on trying and playing with what you found. the risk of turned on dangerous stuffs is not worth the life

haha, true. also previous chapter clearly show that both is vanguard during their youth.
plus, i guess it clear that during their era, magic is not even a thing yet to be used by human. so for folks who isn't aware or used with western fantasy and RPG games concept it actually on point the first generation didn't even know about item special features
