All these flowery goodbyes and farewells are hard to take seriously with all the slave talk inbetween. Keeps throwing me off.

is it just me that has a reeally hard time following the dialogue and general storyline of this manga?

it's like the artist has a very hard time conveying the characters and story moving forward, plus some name changes and honestly i'm super lost on everything that happened until now.

it's not just the manga. the anime as well. in the anime, she did told captain oght that she's a tamer and both captain oght and vice captain velivera.

If she actually gets a slave I'm dropping this. I don't care how well she treats them, or what their circumstances are. It's a bad trope and it needs to stop showing up in every god damned fantasy genre.

Atp I think we need a slavery tag so I can block it.

Thanks for the chapter!
The fact that they call it slavery, when all they needed to do to veil it somewhat is just call them 'indentured servants'.
It's almost slavery; an unpaid work contract. Therefore you can just say they have rights based on the contract that are strictly enforced and you're good to go.

in that world and with those types of magic... A debt slave would be the best, though the whole exercise of making slavery "OK" is very complicated, in this story they have a magical system, a set form of reason were you can fall into it... and we still find several loopholes or caveats

At the same time, as a system it seems to be "functional" or at best straightforward... here we have a lot of systems that allow some sort of indenture servitude, that allows us to say we don´t have it, while totally having it
At least here, the author takes a while making the MC say a lot of times no, not like some of the other Isekais where a slave is complementary upon arrival and the MC is like "in my amazing Japan we don´t have this... buuuut when in Rome..."

Can someone remind me... Who is the person travelling with Ivy?
There isn't a person that she is traveling with, only two magical beasts. The person she mentioned at one point was explained in internal monologue to be her past self, the person she was before being reincarnated into this world.

There is no such thing as a good slave owner. You are still taking the rights away from a human being and treating them like property.
As others have stated, you're going to have a hard time justifying most modern justice systems if you think taking away someone's freedoms is morally wrong. Fines, prisons sentences, community service, house arrest, and many other similar terms would all fall under slavery as depicted in fiction. It's just been rebranded and or buried in sophistry to make it more palatable to the general public since slavery has become such a polarized taboo word.

Yes and that's why I'm a prison abolitionist, it's just modern slavery still. And puritan punitive shit that doesn't help anyone.
Seriously, you're thinking we are just criticizing fantasy media and not real life slavery???
btw, somehow Japan is even more slavery than the American system developed to keep slaves as slaves. American prisoners might be paid pennies but at least they get their money.

Yeah, that way only breeds anarchy and chaos. Not that I don't agree our current system isn't corrupt and ineffectual, but it is better then the the alternative you seem to think would make the world better. Some people can't be rationalized with and others don't share your morality. Ultimately you only have two choices, take away their freedoms, or relinquish your own.

More true then I think you know. During WWII Imperial Japan openly enslaved millions of prisoners of war and used them as labor and sex slaves. That's historical fact.

Fun thought experiment. As you believe that taking a person's freedoms is morally bad, how do you prevent organizations and governments from just enslaving you once they are no longer bound by current accepted laws?

would you look at that... story is intro'd with 1-3stars and "starless" people, then we get lore drop that there is a concept of 5 star magic. it's just incredibly rare...

certainly feels more and more like "starless" is code for "above my paygrade to detect" at churches >.> much like another story I have read...

also, the art style is perfect for this story, I would not be nearly as invested if it look like just any other isekai manga. hey really pull off the light and airy and sparkly aesthetic nicely.

Why not? Just don't be a douche and treat them well: you could give them decent living/working conditions and reasonable workload, teach them new things, punish them fairly, and once their contract is due, offer them a normal job or refer them to a place they could find work and lodgings. At its best it could be like unpaid internship.
I've seen slave harem mangas that were less obsessed with buying slaves. How many chapters in a row was it?
Almost as if isekai creators were working on a quota and were legally required to put at least one such reference. The least they can do is get past that quickly and not mention it again in the story.

I did not expect Viel to be that powerful.

In my opinion, the optimal way for a prison system to be handled is that as few rights as possible, especially in regards to human rights, are stripped of the prisoners and the prisoners are treated as human beings.
Most crimes are committed for five reasons:
  1. The criminal was mentally compromised, be that due to drugs, mental problems or being in an emotionally charged state.
  2. The criminal was sound of mind but saw committing the crime as the only option they had.
  3. The criminal didn't intend to commit the crime but did so by accident.
  4. The criminal did not know/understand that it was a crime.
  5. The criminal did know that what they were doing was a crime, but they were/are unable to understand why it is a crime.
In most cases the person who committed the crime either regrets it and/or needs psychological help, or they were forced into the situation as the result of societal failure, treating them like they are an irredeemable monster that needs to be locked away and isn't the right response.
So in my opinion, prisons and asylums should for the most part be mental health and reintegration facilities.

O . O;

That's very optimistic of you, and nieve. While I'll agree that in some cases an individual might just be misguided or mentally ill, there is unambiguously immoral people in this world who commit illegal acts knowing full well they are crimes.

Let's use Bill Cosby as an example. He was a beloved actor for many many years. Yet it turns out that he would drug women and then rape them. Was he mentally ill, coerced, or under financially to commit these vile acts? Or was he just a sick sadistic bastard with power who took what he wanted, then used that same power so intimate his victims into silence.

While I'll agree the vast majority of people are not steaming piles of shit, there are countless individuals that are motivated by greed, vanity, and pride. They are of sound mind, know full well the criminal acts they commit are crimes, and are not under any form of duress. They just didn't like the way that bitch got the promotion they clearly deserved, or wanted to retire early so started embezzling money from the company they worked for.

Even in an idea environment, with a healthy mind and body. There will inevitably be someone who wants your things or power over you to do as they desire. Not because they are mentally ill, or because they were raised in the wrong way, but because they just didn't care that the rules said they couldn't.

Once again, my theory is that either "starless" means one's ability to bond with a Beast isn't gated by star count (possibly with the stipulation that one cannot force a taming), or that anyone can 'tame' any creature so long as they have that creature's consent.

Firstly, I did say "most crimes" and "in most cases". I do know full well that this doesn't apply to all people.

Secondly, under point five I included people who know that what they are doing is a crime and don't have any psychological issues that make them incapable of being held accountable, but still committed a crime because in their own personal value system it was justified/it was their right to do so. For example, narcissists that value their own happiness, enjoyment and pride above the rights, and possibly even life, of another person. That does not excuse or justify their crimes as a member of society, but they also aren't monsters, they are people whose value system is ill suited for positions where it is expected to put the benefits of others above yourself (positions of power/authority).
