Does Ivy even need a slave, what with her magic cat?
It's more of the idea that Ivy has a more visible present protection around her. Sure Ciel is enough to protect Ivy as she's traveling or hunting outside from physical immediate threats, but in terms of being in towns and around people, having someone with her to look out for unsavoury folks with hidden intentions or help her out in the world is the point (as we saw with this entire arc).

After all, she's still a kid in a new world with different logic and rules)

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of Slaves being a thing either but with the Debt Slave, I can see it being more like working off a debt with a job with social security and benefit. A two bird with one stone kind of deal.

God I hate how trivially japanese authors treat slavery, like for fuck's sake, although there are clearly a ton of corrupt people, there's still good in the world from all the people who've been willing to help her so far. Hire ONE of them instead of slave slave slave yes let's get a slave

The whole idea of a magical contract that protects the person is a useful writing tool as well. Basically an oath.

Now.

They could ALSO just... make that a system. Oaths. Something like a bond, or a contract. Not a slave, but an agreement between 2 parties. That leaves LOTS of world-building: is it a simple thing, or complex? Can you include strange terms into it, or not? Does the oath include intent, or just action? Is the oath guarded by pure magic, or something like a spirit with it's own mind?

All of this would be interesting to flesh out.... AND WOULDNT REQUIRE LITERAL SLAVERY JAPAN COMEON

I forget which title it was, but one had this system where they had a subset of debt-slaves where, if a person found that they couldn't cut it in the economy as they were, they could willingly surrender themselves to to a licensed slave trader. And under such a contract, they would be able to earn money towards buying back the contract. And since they would do this before they incurred a massive debt, they were always much less expensive to buy.

Of course, there were also very strict rules about how such slaves were to be treated, as they were neither criminal-slaves or even the traditional debt slaves; they were not only guaranteed their basic necessities and freedom from abuse, but also a small income. (This was the trade-off for them being so cheap to buy - that you have to keep paying for them, or else surrender them back to a slave trader). So, strangely enough, you had a funny inversion where a fair number of these people would either repeatedly enter into new contracts on a regular basis, or even willingly remain in these contracts. It was a very interesting bit of world building, and quite a twist on the trope.

Japan really has a thing with slavery huh?
Do they even realize that slavery-by-debt is not even "more trustworthy" than being enslaved for being a criminal? Temporary servitude (voluntary or not) only "works" on societies with robust systems to prevent abuse - i.e. burocracy, some sort of rule of law and external institutions to prevent abuse and regulate use. In most isekai, those things are circunvented by using magic seals. Let's see if the author even thought that far (I don't think they did, since they are still going on about slavery while writing a story about a young girl alone etc(

For those who are worry about slave or so
Here is spoiler from ln

She didn't have slave, but instead she have guardian. The one at end of this chapter is her guardian, he lost his arm during escort and that when ivy found him, he witness Sora healing and promises to keep secrets, so on ivy and him got close as friends inside town for a while. Ivy told him her secret about past life and no star , dude accept it gracefully and ivy help resolving dude problem he was having whole time and his family issue...
When it was time for ivy leave, he asked to be her companion for travel as guardian to which ivy happy agree

At some point during journey, they got closed and very familiar with each other, and dude want to adopt ivy as a daughter, which took ivy some time to consideration and accept it. So they are now officially father/daughter duo that travel across the towns, resolving the issue rise in the town

I don't see much benefit to her having extra muscle. She works alone, hides from danger, earns money from trapping, digs through garbage, easily carries all her luggage and quickly makes reliable friends in towns she visits.
A bodyguard would be overkill for her operations, make it harder to sneak around, and in a serious combat situation a single guy would only be good for a distraction anyway.

That's nice, but how would these downtrodden people survive until they manage to find someone to contract them? Because if they have any sort of employment that could support having their basic needs met... why enter into "slavery"? Isn't that just employment, partnership? Why bring magic contracts into it at all?

Would prospective employers just look for potential contract workers off the back streets? Yeah they'd surely want some impoverished, desperate, dirty beggar to take as bodyguards or servants. Would the servants have to roam the streets begging for people to make contracts with them?

The slaves are kept in SOME SORT of institution that could provide shelter and food, at the very least, while also advertising or being a central location for prospective employers.

It sucks but magic slavery is an easy solution to a complex situation: pairing up a vulnerable character with a significantly stronger one, without them having any trust at all. In this manga, we just had a whole lot of "trustworthy" people who are suddenly revealed to be anything but. But hey the MC needs someone to look after them in their travel... I guess let's trust a random man off the street?

Then there's criminal slaves, which is rough because those people are actively failures, not just down on their luck. Maybe the magical contract can make it so that they won't be able to personally harm their master, but how deep does the limitations go? Could they leave their master alone unattended so that their conspirators could then kill them? Does the contract prohibit even the thought of such a conspiracy, therefore basically mentally neuter them from anything but submission and obeisance? Is that better?

Instead of constructing a complex world building with magic contract, they just keep using an easy way out with slavery...

my thoughts are pretty much what others have already said, i don't get the boner Japan has for slavery in their writing. just make magical pacts or contracts or something like that
Magical pacts enforced by magical seals is the typical isekai slavery style tho?

But it ultimately does not matter what you call it, be it "slavery" or "indentured servitude" or enforced "contractual obligations".
What really matters is the terms and restrictions on both parties, not what the word for it is.
Slavery just happens to be the most popular term since it has "historical precedence".

there's a funny correlation between people who just read a bunch of manga and see some portion make mentions to slavery regardless of whether it's touted as good/bad in the context of the story going "damn, the japanese love slavery huh". As if the similarly sized portion of western writers in various genres don't have a similar fondness for writing about it...

also, importantly things would probably get pretty messy if a lot of people found out that she’d tamed one of the deadliest monsters in the world, so getting saved every time by the cat would probably just cause more headaches

Slavery (in this world) is very much a product of magically bound contracts. Slaves need to do x, y, and z, and their owners cant Do a, b, or c to them. People who commit crimes or owe a debt go to a slave trader who sets up a contract that they and the buyer must follow or there are consequences. for debt slaves, it’s not much different from a job with shitty work conditions

Funnily enough, that is very much an element of this series, though ironically, the punishment for breaking a contract like that is usually being sold into slavery
